Found out today I have low HDL. Low enough that I fall in the High risk category even though my overall total cholesterol is in the normal range. This kind of blows my mind. I'm pretty fit, I think losing maybe 10 lbs would be my ideal weight.  On average Id say I run 15-20 miles a week and lift weights 3-4 days. I guess I need to change up the diet, which totally sucks, I love my red meat. Is this just what happens when you start getting older?  4951

@ZMAN: It does, but most of the time you can adjust your diet and make improvements (I did).  Drop the red meat down to a couple times a week, add walnuts and avocados (guac) to your diet a few times a week.  That alone for me got me well into the good zone on HDL.

I am 42 and have the same problem with HDL's too. But I am overweight by about 30 pounds.   My doctor told me weight lifting is really good for raising HDL's.  4951

@ZMAN: That must be a genetic thing??? From my understanding, exercise is the best ( maybe only??) way to raise HDL and you're getting plenty of that. I do know some statins will lower HDL along with LDL so you want to avoid those.

@Jpgurl: Yeah, Im thinking it has to be partially my genetics. Both my mom and dad take statins. Im going to try and tweak my diet a little and see if that helps. I really dont think its possible or practical for me to try to exercise anymore than I already am. Hopefully I can get it under control and I wont have to start taking any pills.

You can definitely bump it up some with diet changes. In addition to above stated , a good quality omega supplement and steel cut oatmeal and similar grains will help. Not a huge increase but enough to help. Worked for me! 4951

Fatty fish too should help. I'm trying to raise mine too. I eat half a small avocado daily and try to eat salmon once or twice a week. 4951

I take a fish oil pill each day...   worked wonders and I hate fish...   Can't taste a thing.. I keep mine in the freezer so they don't smell either. 4951

@ZMAN: Well in case no one mentioned it to you, there is a Dairy Queen going in on 494 and a Raising Caine's in Town Center, so that should help.
