I'm terrible at choosing. Currently yellow with light brown trim. 4951

Pick a tone from within the brick color. Usually there is quite a bit of color in there.. Anything from creamy white to dark brown. 4951

Hubby gave me a whopping 5 minutes to choose from my samples, so we could submit to HOA. Went with 2 shades of gray, brown tone grays. I really dislike the current colors.

Was thinking mold or mildew color might come in handy. 4951

@MarT:

With the heat here, I would choose light colors. 4951

Sherwin Williams has a service where a paint specialist comes out to your house and helps you pick out colors.

The cost is offset with a gift certificate you can use when you're ready to purchase paint.

It's worth it, especially if you're actually considering painting your house yellow. That's a pretty clear cry for help.

@Spork, there is a yellow, I mean O M G yellow, house in Trailwood.  I do not know how they got permission.  It is awful at night, during the day, on a sunny day, it is just horrifying.  IMO

@Fallon:

I know the house you are talking about. Every time I see it I think "oh when the paint dries it won't be so bad". It's taking forever to dry.. lol

Ps when I repainted my house I didn't ask for permission. Unless you are contributing to the cost, you get no say in what I do, hoa or not. 4951

@allymansfield: I have lived in heavily deed restricted communities my entire adult life. If you intentionally purchase in one you sign a contract to abide by their rules. They can heavily fine you, put a lien on your home or actually force you out of the violations are serious enough.

For those that do not want to follow the rules and contribute to the cause of keeping the neighborhood nice and peoperty values high, there are plenty of neighborhoods without deed restrictions and HOAs. Nothing kills a comminity quicker than those who don't care and disregard the HOA rules, especially with exterior features like paint color, yard and property maintenance, etc.

@MarT has a gorgeous home and I'm sure she picked colors that work great.

My house has tan brick. We had a new roof put on about a year ago and we did gray shingles.  It looks fantastic. 4951

Most HOAs don't require approve if you stay close to original color or within earth tones that blend in with the nearby homes. Wouldn't need approval to go from grey tones to brown, or go up or down a few shades.

Now to go yellow, blue ozr other bright colors would no doubt need approval. The key is knowing, respecting and staying within the guidelines you agreed to at closing. Signing then saying eff you later is just jerk behavior. 4951

Our Trailwood house had tan bricks, and we went with tan main / brown trim colors.  Here is what it looked like.  The original trim color was green, which didn't look terrible, but we liked our color better:

@donnatella, the house I was referring to would 100% have had to have gotten approval.  It is dear God yellow from top to bottom. It was previously white painted bricks.And yes, if you live in an HOA go by the guidelines.  But in this case, I am horrified they kept this color.  As a homeowner, no way you can drive up to that daily and think, wow we done good.   Cause you need sunglasses at midnight.And I do wonder wth the HOA was thinking by approving them.  Esp Trailwood's HOA. They are notorious for being hard butts.@ZMAN, I bet that does look good.  I am thinking I am going to change my color to light gray's too.  I will have to get HOA approval because I am going away from cream.  A house down the street went with a dark gray and it looks amazing.

@Fallon: It is very possible and likely the color was NOT approved.  They may likely have a lien against the home.    I know yellow is normally not approved.   Curious minds want to know!!!!  lol

@Spork:

The yellow wasn't my choice, previous owner, it's not bright, but I don't like it at all.
