It seems like everywhere I go that's all anyone wants to talk about these days.I really don't remember it being so popular when I was a kid, It seems like its just crazy now.Sometimes I wonder how it got so popular, it seems like a total snoozefest to me. A bunch of fat guys falling all over each other mixed in with a ****load of commercials. Every once in a while something exciting happens, but if you look away for a second you could miss it.Why do you think people like it so much? 4951

For Texans, it is an environmentally induced mutation that manifests its phenotype around age 5-6.  For other regions, I have no explanation. 4951

It is a sport showing brute force no different than watching wrestling or boxing. Personally I would rather watch baseball and basketball. Go Spurs. 4951

@ZMAN: My dad is from the US, but my mom is not, and I was raised oversees, you could substitute soccer for football and have the exact same question.
I have no idea why any sports are so popular, but I do enjoy them myself.  My life is not over if my team loses though, no idea why people get that into it, my favorite teams don't pay my bills. If I had to speculate, I think it may the social aspect, getting together to watch the games, excuse to grill out and drink beer, and common ground to have a conversation.  Beats talking politics.I wonder if fantasy and pots have increased interest as well.   4951

I was talking to a guy from Europe and over there they could careless about college sports. Their soccer though is like our NFL but more intense with fans. Fantasy football as well. People love it. 4951

Because it's a man's sport and not for the weak. That's what soccer is for. Oh...I got kicked in the shin, I'm dying over here.

Yellow Card

Thanks for the magic spray, I'm okay now. Whew! I thought my leg was going to fall off my body.

Meanwhile, lineman breaks 3-4 fingers by getting them caught in face mask. Nope, he tapes them up and still plays.

No magic spray. No theatrics...just hard nosed physical American football. People here love that stuff. They love it across the pond too, but just haven't been exposed to it like we have here.

I love football, but I actually love it more for the x's and o's/strategy than the machismo/hard-hitting aspect of it. I love college football for the pageantry and the tradition of it all. The part that I don't like is the overzealous alumni boosters and the recruiting wars. There's just something really creepy about grown men who care so much about where an 18 year old wants to go to college.... 4951

@podunk: It's the modern day version of gladiators.   With all the time-outs and commercial time-outs, I rarely see a game that doesn't last 3 hours (even though playing time is 60 minutes).  Actually, out of that 60 minutes, there are only about 20 minutes of actual physical play.  I don't care for Pro football, but I do like to watch some college football.  However, more and more, I find myself nodding off or getting bored.  I absolutely hate the useless, constant talking of the field reporter and the "color person".  When I watch a game, I just want to hear the crowd and have the announcer call the plays.  The rest of the time, they need to shut-up!Now, for real non-stop action, I like to watch rugby or Australian Rules football.  No pads and very few pauses in the action.
