I don't quite understand all this stuff I hear. When I was a kid there weren't as many that we had to have but I can remember getting some of them like small pox and polio. The polio vaccine left a scar that I still have and it hurt! My older brother is a polio survivor was very lucky as it really only left him with a few muscular issues he can live with. I remember having chicken pox and the measles, the mumps and the German measles as they were called. My 5 kids who were all born in the 1980's had whatever was required and all suffered no real after effects. But my oldest son and his wife are flat out against them, are both well educated and claim to have done all kinds of research and neither of their kids has been vaccinated for anything. The kids are home schooled so the issue hasn't come up there.  I guess you can live a healthy life without vaccines as long as you are able to avoid exposure later in life but there is no guarantee. And I would think traveling abroad or living in a highly populated area could also greatly increase your risk. And what about a job that requires international travel or if you want to be in the military or a health profession. I treat my kids like adults and only offer my advice or opinion if asked but I do worry about the grand kids. 4951

I can't say anything other than I was a pin cushion as a kid - lived overseas - suffered no ill effects. Our kids got whatever they were supposed to get and also healthy and happy.
I think at some point those not vaccinated are at risk for catching something nasty. You might be able to keep them isolated in your home and town but once they hit college or get a job they join the Petri dish. 4951

I just don't understand the logic in not vaccinating. Illness like TB, whooping cough and polio were gone until fairly recently. It also turns out that the "researcher" who led the no vaccine charge, turned out to be mistaken and he admitted it. Unfortunately, the movement was underway and there's no convincing some of hose parents.

I respect their rights to parent as they see fit, but I don't agree with doubt anything that could hinder a child's health and safety, as well as the health and safety of the public at large.

It is basically is misinformed fad and people are gambling with the lives and health of many.

Get ready for the firestorm because I was slammed for my views the last time this came up. 4951

@Chrisinkingwood: you cant travel abroad without certain vaccinations. some countries will refuse entry or visas. and while an unvaccinated person MIGHT remain healthy if they are never exposed to the diseases they have no vaccinated immunity against, that is only as long as the pool of unvaccinated persons is tiny and not concentrated in comparison to the vaccinated populace. the cdc has issued warnings that some areas are feared to be ideal sites for an outbreak and an epidemic

Again, it is their right as parents to deny vaccines, however their rights end where the rights of others, and the general public as a whole, begin.

If they want to buck the system and refuse vaccines, they should also be prepared to home school and deal with the fact that other parents will not want their children mixing within certain social circles.

Life is about choices, and this one choice very well could affect their family in many other negative ways.

It's the same logic as knowingly sending your kids to school with a fever and trying to cover it up. You won't consider the rights of others to help protect the immediate surrounding kids, making the school have to step in and protect them on your behalf. 4951

I believe it's their right to refuse vaccinations, but, they are relying on the rest of the  population to get properly vaccinated to protect their children.   Unfortunately, healthy people who refuse vaccines makes the world a little more dangerous for the immune compromised that have to delay vaccines or not get them.  I hesitated on the chicken pox vaccine for our two youngest, I wanted them to get natural immunity, but when they were never exposed, I finally gave in and got them the vaccination before they got so old that they could be very sick if they got it. There have been outbreaks of whooping cough, enough that I made sure I got the booster myself, it's miserable.  4951

@ProblemAgain: I just finished reviewing HPV, one thing that came to mind when Dick Perry tried in 2007 to force us Texans to get the shot by using Executive order at a cost of $300.00 for each child... well one more year will swing around when they will be age ready for the shot. When that time comes will revisit the thought of doing it just to understand what HPV is in detail...

@podunk: We were required to get it before our grandbaby was released from the NICU.  There are some infants and children that because of their very fragile medical status can not be vaccinated or at least not on schedule. They are at risk when others are not vaccinated.  It isn't just their own child that the non-vaxers put at risk.  Infants too
young to vaccinate will get sick, the elderly will get sick, the
immune-compromised (treatment for cancer and HIV will leave you that
way, as well as other diseases) will get sick. People whose vaccination
did not "take" will get sick. These diseases are not just simple illnesses. They can leave babies, children, and adults with serious disabilities or can even be fatal.   Our grandbaby is a micro-preemie. He was 4 months premature and spent over 3 months in a level 3 NICU.  Although he is chronologically now 11 months old, he is still considered medically fragile and even a cold could send him to the back to the hospital and in intensive care.

@donnatella:
He actually never said it causes autism and he DID say that more research needed to be done. If you read his original study, you can see for yourself. How can millions of families all tell the same story of their children being injured by a vaccine yet no one believes them!? They are not the crazy ones. You should watch Vaxxed because the government actually did cover up the link between autism and the age the MMR is received. You can stream it for $3.99. Well worth it.

Where there is risk, there needs to be choice.

My oldest and youngest were vaccinated on schedule, my middle didn't receive her first until 5 years old because of the remote chance of triggering a seizure. I can see the benefit of possibly spreading them out over a longer period but only because I hated them getting 3 or 4 shots at a time. 4951

@BooBear: That's completely different than totally refusing all vaccines because of the claims of one guy and a series of celebrities who spoke out against them. 4951

@mutton:  I'm sure Perry was financialy "assisted" by the vaccine's pharmaceutical company. I felt he was completely wrong to mandate an unproven vaccine.I recently watched a documentary that showed Polio is making a comeback due to people not being vaccinated.  One of my mother's sisters had "infantile paralysis" (another name for polio).  She could not feed herself, walk, or control her bowels.  She had to be tended to as if she were an infant until she died of pneumonia at age 21.  There was no vaccine back then, nor did they know how to give her physical therapy to improve her life.  I also had a cousin about my age that did not take the vaccine, and caught polio.  Fortunately, they caught it early and knew better how to treat it.  He lived a normal life except for some muscle control loss.Vaccinations don't stop when you're a kid.  Over the past year, I had vaccines for shingles, pneumonia, and DPAP.  I also get the yearly flu vaccine.
