We are going to fight our property taxes this year.  Has anyone ever done this?  If so, did you hire someone to do it for you?  Who did you use?  Was it worth it? 4951

I did it myself.  Went well.  I just brought pictures of some issues I had and I found some similar homes on their comparables that were paying less than I was.   4951

If you mean for 2016, you will fight next spring. If you mean 2015, too late, the fight is over. I have successfully done it myself - requires work and patience. I now have a lawyer do it probono. He takes a third of the savings. He was a new one and successful in achieving reduction this year, after I fired my old one for non-performance for two years (no reduction, held flat). 4951

@rugburn:  Who did you use that did not do you any good and who are you using in the future?  PM me if you do not want to name them on the forum.  I understand!

I got my notice to go 8/11. I protested myself last year and they reduced it back to 2014. Have the same pics and file to take with me. Show up, put your phone on the desk and ask if you can record and make your case. Housing market is at its end for this time around, oil not rebounding and those oil/gas folks are selling not buying. I still wonder where they come up with some of those evaluations. 4951

@Steven H: I don't think my house could sell for the price they have it listed at and I don't think anything in the neighborhood has sold that high.

Get an area realtor to get comparables that are for sale or have sold recently.  This also works very well!  Good luck! 4951

They have a computer protest now, but I always do the one in person because I feel like you get better results. Its super simple, took me like 20 min in the HCAD office, just made an appointment, I dint bring pictures or comps or really any paper work at all, I just argued my case and had my appraisal lowered by about 15 percent in about 5 minutes, which I was happy with. They seemed like they are just trying to get people in and out of there as quickly as possible and the person I plead my case with seemed like they would have probably given me whatever I asked for within reason. The biggest PIA about the whole thing is driving to the office on 290. 4951

Just go in there very happy nice smiling. If you go in being a jerk u don't get anything accomplished. I just take the same photos in from last 2 yrs of trying to remodel and all the other things that need to be fixed plus all the houses that if they're abandoned by you or for sale any kind of store items that are on your property that helps as well 4951

@pickles: We did as well - but for today and neither of us are able to go (we started the process back in April and since then I took a new job and DH just got promoted to a new position last week - neither of us could take off!). From what we read, it's not mandatory to go to the informal one. I hope...!

We have used O'Connor since we moved here - they get 50% of what they save us.  Seems like one big giant scam. I am sure they are all in bed together so they can move it up and down and everybody gets paid.  I just can't be bothered going though the process myself. In 10 years our house has swung about 20% in value.  I know it is currently valued for more than I can sell it for, but probably not by much.  Based on some neighbor's houses, I do know if you don't protest you get seriously hosed. 4951

@ctl74: if you miss the informal one that is 1 person meeting you have to go to formal hearing w about 8-10 people in conference room very intimidating. I was 1st time home buyer didn't know anything but doing my own research. I did win though will all the things I brought to table. I did this back in May hate that it is next week when I have to deal w kids going to their orientation stuff hopefully I can go. It's not mandatory for 1 st hearing but it does help w just meeting w 1 person instead of 10.
