OMG, I though i had been bitten by mosquitos but i am pretty sure i came in contact with a poisonous plant when i was cleaning some overgrown shrubs in the yard.  UGH!!  How long does this intense itching last?  Its been several days now. 4951

@foxymamaDude, try taking a Benadryl and applying some Caladryl Lotion to the affected areas.......And hopefully, chica, this will help bring you some much needed relief....

Sucks. Got tired of learning that lesson. Now I always wears long sleeves and pants. I would rather sweat that get that stuff again. Sumac, that stuff is just evil to me. The oil can also get on your sheets and stay there for weeks even after a shower.  4951

Update:  Went to an urgent clinic yesterday cause the itchy was spreading to my legs, and other arm and i couldn't stop scratching.  I didn't want to risk an infection.  So doctor confimed poison ivy exposure and contact dermatitis.  Got a shot, prednisone pack and topical cream.  The shot spiked my blood sugar to over 200 and had me feeling crazy dizzy and weird but DH gave me one of his actos+met diabetic pills and it made me feel better and my blood sugar was 106 this morning.   It has spiked some today but not over 200 as I have been really eating clean.  The itching is getting better and so far no more spreading today.  I have found several areas in my yard that have poison ivy.  I have emailed multiple companies to give me quotes to remove it but no responses so far.  I will be making phone calls tomorrow to speed things along.  Kind of scared to do any yard work right now and just want to hire it our for awhile.  The back is really a spraind ankle waiting to happen.  Its a steep hill with lots of wholes from the previous renters who let there dog dig it up like crazy. The landlord says he is sending someone to fill in the backyard but that has yet to happen. 4951

Another easy way to put killer on the plants is to tape a paintbrush to a long pole or yardstick. Once you have brush affixed, dip brush into cup with brush killer. Just buy a cheap brush so you can toss in trash when done. 4951

@foxymama: Oh I hope you start feeling better.  I have never had poison ivy but I know anything itchy sucks.  Prayers for you my friend.

I grew up in Atlanta and that stuff is everywhere. Grows as fast as the Kudzu! Just be careful and wash off if exposed. 4951

Follow @ fallon's advice. You will need to do it yourself, either now or later, because even if the pros come out now, it will return later. Also, as @beastmode mentioned, if you use methods to keep the oil from the plants from contacting your skin, you won't get an allergic reaction. 4951

Do not forget the clothes you wore, gloves, and hat may still have the oil on them. Dogs and cats are not affected by poison ivy, but catty the oil on the fur. 4951

update:  After a 6 day round of prednisone my symptoms didn't improve and have gotten worse since. More and more spreading, in places you don't want to be itching!!  So, i saw a dermatologist this morning and apparently 6 days was not enough for my case.  He said i had a rebound effect and symptoms got worse after the short course of prednisone.   So he put me on a stronger and longer course over 12 days.  He said by Sunday i should be feeling much better.  He also said the Roundup will kill the plant but that it takes a year for the oils to be gone from it once it dies.  Still trying to find someone to remove the stuff.  I see more and more of it growing in the bushes, under trees, etc.   When renting this house i thought great lots of shade and less neighbor issues since the house is surrounded by woods and only one other house.  Well my point of view has changed a bit on that now. Emoticon  I am thoruoghly education on all things poison ivy, oak and sumac related!  And will keep a diligent eye out for the stuff when hiking in the blue ridge mountains and when we shop for a house in a  year or two.   "Shorter courses of steroids may be followed by severe rebound exacerbations shortly after drug therapy is discontinued"...http://www.aafp.org/afp/2000/0601/p3408.html 4951

I grew up in the north Atlanta area in Dunwoody and there was no shortage of poison ivy when I lived there. It's grows almost as much as the kudzu!  My dad was never too effected by it gut my mom used to wear garden gloves and long sleeves when she was out in the back cleaning up the brush. 4951
