Had a talk with my DW about the dog, she wasn't too keen on the idea but
I have a few days to try to convince her. She feels like if and when we get a new dog she
would want one to raise from a puppy that we pick out. She also said
while she would like a dog it does get to be a problem when we want to
travel and without a dog there hasn't been as much dog fur needing to be
vacuumed up. I reasoned that she is traveling a lot as usual for work and I
am the one at home and would like a dog for companionship. Also that he
is a well trained dog who has bonded with me and I just am not as interested in puppy training
at this time. I reminded her that we aren't doing as many trips as we used to in an effort to pay down debt and save for retirement.  I also pointed out that he is 6 years old and it's likely
that he has another 5-7 years of life so it isn't too long a commitment. We will see. Last night the dog curled up next to my side of the bed to
sleep and I have been showing him a lot of attention within my DW's view so she sees how affectionate he is. 4951

Make sure your DW gets to see how well trained & obedient this dog is, does he fetch? respond well to commands both on and off leash? Make sure gets to see the work that has already gone into him. Remind her that not only are you the one that would be doing all the training, but also all the and cleaning up after accidents of a puppy and dealing with the chewing that they do. Would be a shame if a puppy chewed up some of her good shoes.   Puppies are cute, but they sure can be a lot of work to train into a well behaved dog. 4951

@deltadawn: I don't think it's a puppy.  I believe it is a 6 year old dog.  It is past the puppy training and chewing.  I vote for keeping it.  @chrisinkingwood needs a sleeping companion when the wife is out of town.

I don't think it's a puppy.

@dotti573: My comment was in response to his DW saying she wanted a puppy. I know this dog is well past the puppy stage, a HUGE plus in my mind.

My current dog(which I threatened the owner of with police action if he didn't turn the dog over to me) came to me with some serious dog attack issues, several bites to the face(one of which was infected because of lack of treatment). She had some people fear when I brought her home(I had to literally pull her out from under a car because another dog the owner had attacked her infront of me and she didn't think I would help because the owner never did) but once she settled in she blossomed into a wonderful dog great with people but man that first week when her stress level was through the roof she was a demon(never bit me, but she snapped and growled if I didn't wake her up before approaching or if I tried to grab her neck area quickly). Stress will change a sweet dog into a monster but you can't really blame them for it or hold it against them. My dog has not growled at anyone(except the dogs on the other side of the chainlink fence who goad her with their new toys or bones) in almost a year even my nieces when they jumped on her while she was sleeping(she might have bit them but I keep her muzzled anytime we visit or they visit me just as a precaution so she doesn't have to go into another room and can sit with us). she just huffed and went back to sleep. Can't see it very well but each one of those dark splotches is a scab from a bite so she was roughed up pretty bad(over a long period as she lived with the dog that was attacking her) 4951

Tell your dw she doesn't want a puppy! Our dds gave dh a puppy when he was sick. I have to take her out about 8-10 times a day because she's bored. All the shots, neutering, training them to stay off furniture. Puppies are a lot of work. Tell your dw when y'all travel y'all can let your ds in atascocita dog sit like you do for them. Easy peasy. Lol 4951

@Chrisinkingwood: What a cutie.  I love when they look at you with their head cocked to the side.  Hopefully he will become your new buddy.

@frebu:

That's so sad for this baby! It sickens me when I think how cruel some people are to kids and pets. I'm so glad you have her! 4951
