My daughter is now 17, and we've done nothing to prepare her for driving. I'm beginning to think that a SafeWay class is our best bet. With our schedules, there's a good chance that we'll get started and then not be consistent with the parent teaching portion.There are a lot of packages, though, and I'm not sure which to buy. Probably not the one that costs $2700, but the lower priced packages still require most of the driving practice to be done with parents.Did you kid(s) take SafeWay classes? If so, which one and were you happy with it? 4951

Wow! That is pricy! I used Safeway in the 80's and I still have flashes of their teaching when I am on the road. Be sure you learn the lingo/acronyms that they use so you can reinforce them with your child. 4951

Not sure if you can still do it, but you should just do the parent taught one. Let her take the permit test get that then do some driving and maybe skew some of the numbers a little bit. If she is a good driver after a while then just go in and take the test once she turns 18. Cost my parents very little money and I was able to do a little studying on my own and got some insight on what they look for in the driving portion because I was in line with someone who failed the driving portion the day before so he was able to tell me what they looked for. 4951

@JerryJustice: I highly recommend parent taught. That's what we did with our daughter, cost maybe 250 total

For us, parent taught has worked the best.  I'm still working with one of our kids who is 19.   He plans to take the driving portion before he turns 20.  It has been my experience the older they are when they get their licence the better driver they are.   4951

I put 3 kids through Safeway, and I'm glad I did.  This was 10-15 years ago, and I know I didn't pay that much.  The important thing was that Safeway took care of getting the permit, so I didn't have to stand on that line. 4951

@HollyHobby:

Holy Crap! How many sessions does $2700 include? I will teach your daughter to drive standard and automatic for way less than that! 4951

@allymansfield:  The $2700 is more than I would pay, but it covers all 30 hours of practice driving.

Mine did the minimum class with just 7 drives. She spread them out over a few months. Every time she did a drive there then I would practice with her on similar roads. Im not going to lie, the first few drives were terrifying! But each drive got a little better as she became more confident. No way I could only do the parent taught so Safeway was a great option. 4951

If she has had no driving experience and you can afford the school USE THE SCHOOL! We have enough non educated drivers in KW.  The school will teach her things that you are used to and a habit and forget about learning.  Or things you have learned that are not best driving habits.  There are also less expensive schools, but Safeway is familiar with the areas around and the bad habits of KW drivers.  They will teach them what to watch for and best defensive driving for the area.  It is common fact, most accidents occur within 5 miles of home.  Your teen will be driving in that proximately a lot.  4951

@Txbutterfly:  People who take the time and effort to teach their own kids to drive, take it very seriously.  My parent taught drivers are not undereducated in driving.  Also, people who do parent taught driver ed improve their own driving.  Because I teach my kids to drive I strive to be a good driver and to always set the best example.  In all reality, my parent taught kids get much much more drive time.

My son took classes there are got his license easily. He was 16.It is worth the money but not 2700. I think we paid between 500 to 700. .Safeway is great! The lady that works the front desk is very helpful and nice. 4951

Our daughter took the class at Sears last year - I think it was around $700?  Classes every day, and they did I think 10 "drives" with an instructor.  I was pretty pleased with the course - she had to do a lot of work and really take it seriously.Yes, she still had to log a lot of hours with a parent (40, I think?), but I do think the instructor-drives were very valuable.  4951

I will also vouch for safeway.  They do an excellent job of teaching defensive driving, and a whole host of safe driving techniques that I don't believe existed when I was learning to drive.  We did the standard classes and lots of driving with parents for the majority of the hours required.  4951
