There are several here. Might want to take those convos off line due to the no advertising policy here. 4951

I run my business out of my home. Though  I'm not supposed to promote it, I can describe it. Most of my success comes from being the best I can be at what ever I do. 4951

@donnatella:

Actually admin has said if someone ask we can answer. And she isnt the first one who has asked how to make money from home. Its an on growing interest. I dont think she was asking us to advertise as much as she was asking how to make it work and ideas.

What area are your interest. Networking?. In home shop? Inhome daycare? Crafts? The best way to succeed is to make sure anything you do is something you have a deep passion for because there will always be downs and money loss at first and if you are not passionate about it you will quit. The only way to fail or get fired from a homebased business or self employment is to quit.

I'm an artist and work from a home studio. I travel and do pop up shows, sell online, and take custom orders.

I'm a freelance writer, on the side from my full-time job. Prior to moving here, I had a monthly magazine whom I had been writing for, for about 10 years. Since I had become friends with the editor over those years, she kept me on. Once I settled in down here, I started reaching out to the local magazines, with writing samples. I ended up landing a job with Living. (They came to me on a Thursday with 3 jobs and needed them for the Monday. I knew I couldn't say "no" so I took them and have been writing for them, almost monthly, for 15 months.)

I found word-of-mouth is helpful, too. My dentist advertises in Living, so I was talking with his office manager/wife about it and next thing you knew, I was hooked up with one of the sales reps in the area (who didn't even know there was a local writer here, as the magazine operates out of Dallas).

What kind of questions do you have? I'm not the most knowledgeable on a lot, but I know away around my invoicing, business expenses and taxes for my business. Emoticon 4951

Wow I am actually glad someone shared what they do. But its kinda sad that we cant talk about this kinda stuff on the community web page because they will take it down.. As I see it I live in this community I want to know more of what people in kingwood do. If someone has something they sell or make from home we should we be able to give them a shout out for that and not be like..... (thats advertising). Any one eles think that they should add a section to this page where we can advertise??.

To kingwood.com giving the people of kingwood the opportunity to advertise their home base business will only help our people from our community and get the local to know more about thier work. And I know we can advertise on other pages but I just dont understand why not on kingwood.com

If you take this down. I dont care because I am speaking my mind.

@susibaby: KDC makes its money from advertisers. We have a forum to post on that is supported by those paid advertisers. KDC is a business and not just a playground for us.. Would you want someone coming in your business, promoting their own, or expecting you to give your services away for free? That's the point behind no advertising rules in the main forum. Paid advertisers get banners and ad and promotion. Non-paid advertisers get removed by admin.

@Burnsway: I wasn't trying to stop people from talking about what they do, but I do know how serious admin is about non-paid advertisers and it was just a reminder to word replies carefully. I know what most everyone here does in their home businesses and I think they are all great businesses run by good honest people who should be supported. I do a lot of referring to KDC peeps, just offline.

@susibaby:  As stated before, we can talk about it. A lot depends on what type of business and the clientele you are looking at. I've started 5, though only one solely mine, which I've had for 22 years now.If I were to give advice, it would be learning to say no. You're not going to sell to everyone.

I prefer to keep things local whenever possible. Supporting local businesses, and home-based business are preferable to support the individual and keep it in our community. When I ask a business or person for a card, I ask if they are a local business or a franchise of a chain.

We are looking for a hot tub and for a whole-home generator, and part of the search is to make sure we keep it local. Sometimes we have to go slightly out of the HKA area, but still try to make it locally owned. Instead of buying coffee k-cups on-line at Green Mountain, I pay a little more and order from Coffee Icon, a locally owned comparable business in Tomball.

Local isn't always possible, so I use Amazon, who has a local distribution location very nearby and they do business with a lot of small online retailers, which is a plus. 4951

I just recently started a new business that I run from my home office. Doing pretty well so far. Networking is key, knowing your marketing and focusing there, understanding what your customers need and want and providing for that to them, offering a better alternative to what's in the market, recognizing All of your costs of doing business and factoring them into your prices (price modeling), competitive pricing, flexibility to adjust or provide specific needs to clients, not being afraid of being told no, willingness to hustle and reach out to potential clients, being knowledgeable about your market clients and product and how it directly impacts the customer...The list goes on and on.

Mine are Safety Training for businesses and individuals, think OSHA and Red Cross type stuff (new), dog collars (local shops and online), swim lessons (all word if mouth), and baby blankets (word of mouth sakes) 4951

@susibaby: I wish there were a forum or website for home based business that we could search in our local area, like a local Etsy.  KDC is great, but it's expensive to advertise, especially if the products you are selling are not very expensive.  Shows are fun to do, but very time consuming and expensive and a lot of times they are crapped up with "businesses" that are not really home based (Senscy, and other pyramid schemes or just garage sale junk).  It's hard to find shows that actually have things that people do or created from their own mind/hands.
