In a 400-page report released Tuesday, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine says its review of nearly 900 studies and years of disease data showed no increase in health risks due to the consumption of genetically modified food.It reviewed disease registries in the U.S. and Canada, where GMOs have been a regular part of the diet since the 1990s, and the United Kingdom and Western Europe, where GMOs are not widely consumed. It found no difference in the increase or decrease of specific health problems after the introduction of GMO foods and the associated increase in glyphosate.LINK 4951

I have mixed feelings about GMO and the non GMO movement. In it's most primary form man has been genetically modifying foods and animals since we crawled out of caves and began farming and raising livestock. Mendel spent years cross pollinating peas to get a better crop and by doing so laid the groundwork for modern genetics. Can man over engineer plants and animals? Probably and their could be deep ramifications. I am also bothered by the control that Monsanto has over farmers keeping and reusing seeds, they are often sued for doing so and many of these farmers are in poor countries.  4951

Monsanto seems to be one of those companies that gets branded as evil for protecting their product, and are underappreciated for their role in making life easier for many that would otherwise suffer. As long as we have nations with policies that produce poverty at high rates, we're going to need companies like Monsanto to help produce high yield crops at low prices. I never understood the mass speculation that GMO crops are harmful for human consumption. 4951

The reports have always been made by companies that are paid by GMO producers.

We vaccinate more.
We use GMOs
We have better hospital care and
Access to more food yet

Our disease rate is higher
Autism is hire
Cancer seems to be at higher risk and things like shingles are spreading like crazy.
Childrens dental is bad right at first baby tooth many times.

But really its because we smoke, drink liquer and drink coke more even those infants....lol

If you dont think our food and medicine supply is tanted you are not paying attention. 4951

@Burnsway:

It may be tainted. But in life there are no solutions. There are just alternatives with different trade-offs. In the US we have better access to choose the alternatives with the most acceptable trade-offs.

Back in the day there was dire predictions of overpopulation and inability to feed the masses. Mass starvation was predicted. The primary reason such dire predictions from that era's best and brightest never came to be is because they failed to predict the ability of humans to innovate and adapt.

Is it better to die from starvation or risk the possibility that some of our adaptations may cause us to die from something else later? Dying from something else is usually more costly, but during that time most humans have the ability to be more productive and add value to society. 4951

I think the problem is most people just think plants are being cross bred and don't realize DNA from other organisms are being put into seeds.  I just want truth in labeling.  If some doesn't mind chemicals or fish DNA in the seeds of their corn, it doesn't matter to me, but I want to have some idea of what I am actually eating.  4951

I wasn't planning to write a novel about it. But perhaps more detail will make my point clearer.  Do you remember how in the 1970's scientists were fearful of overpopulation because our agriculture could not support it? Scientists were actually predicting global starvation. Monsanto changed this. They engineered seeds by speeding nature's own techniques to produce greater crop yields and maximize the consumable product.   Genetic modification is not necessarily problematic. We first had to observe that genes change in nature for us to become curious as to how we could nudge that process along to favor the traits we found desirable. It's basically human selection of a natural process.  Mixing plant species is how we've produced fruits and vegetables free of viruses, plants that survive droughts, can withstand weed killer that would otherwise choke out desirable plants. Monsanto helped us to innovate crops that yield more and cost less. It helped us grow our food supply and streamline the business of farming.
Without genetic modifications, think about how much more land we would need to use to produce the same crop yield. More land use means more resources needed to farm it. More tractors, more fuel, more imported labor, more spraying to control weeds and pests. Without genetic modifications we would also be seeing our fruits and vegetables being sold at a higher cost. Since price is also a factor when people shop, we would see the cost of a healthier diet being even higher.
