Mine was my first car. Told the salesman price was a little high, not sure if I could afford it.. He then dropped the price some, assuming I would finance through them at their rip off rate. When signing the deal, last page was the finance part. We already signed on the price. At that point I pulled out a fat roll of cash. Said I was paying cash. Man was he **** lol! He basically made no money on the car. I got it lower than blue book value. I didn't even know what I was doing other than not wanting anyone to know I had all the cash on me.   4951

I love negotiating for new vehicles.  I may do a few test drives to make sure about the model and features, but I walk away without even making an offer.  Then, I do my homework.  With a little work on the internet, you can find out what the wholesale price is for your specific vehicle and features.  Once you know that, and have some patience with the salesman, you'll get a good deal.  One time, a dealer was offering $1,000 off OR 0% financing. I did a little spreadsheet on what my monthly payments (and total cost) would be for various prices. I showed the salesman my printout on interest rates and he got so confused.  He couldn't figure out how I knew that.  I got him so flustered, I got more than $1,000 off AND I got 0% financing.  I think he actually got tired of dealing with me.Oh, if you bring someone with you, avoid talking about the vehicle or price while alone with them in those little cubicles/offices.  Many car dealers have those areas bugged (usually the phone/intercom).  So when they are going to "talk to their boss", they are usually in a room listening to what you are saying.  Hearing you say what you're really willing to pay, or hearing your spouse say they really want that car will hurt your negotiations.  However, you can give them false information by talking about you're not crazy about a couple of the features or the color, talk about another dealer, talk about another car manufacturer, etc.The last time we bought cars (Toyota Avalon and Tacoma truck), I got on-line bids from a dealership down on I-45 SW Freeway.  The prices were just above wholesale.  I called the on-line manager and told him we were coming to buy them.  When we got there, he passed me off to another salesman and they tried to sell us something off of the lot.  I walked back into the office and demanded to see the manager.  When I showed him the offers and explained that I was ready to buy, he said they didn't have the exact models and colors on hand.  He asked for a week to get them and that he would stand by the deal.  It helped that I mentioned that I could take his dealer's written offer and go to another dealership and get the same or a better deal.  He got both vehicles within a week.  The car actually came with a few extra features but he threw those in at no charge.  We wrote checks for both vehicles. 4951

My best haggling price was out in Los Angeles on the Sunset Strip back in the early 90's. I found a leather shop that custom made all of Axl Roses leather jackets. They had a white leather jacket similar to the one he wore in the Paradise City video. They made two. Axl has one. They were selling the other for $850.00. I negotiated them down to $250 including tax. I walked out with the jacket. 24 years later I still have it. 4951

I was buying a Benz. I told the salesman that I only had so much to spend and I wouldn't go a penny over that and I would not disclose that amount to them.  we did the whole "let me talk to my manager thing" back and forth a few times. I finally told him I was almost there but at this price, I would not be able to afford the extended warranty, fabric protection, and all that stuff. I told him how I didn't get it on my last car and I regret it.  (That's virtually pure profit for the dealership.)he went back to his manager, lowered the price $1,100 dollars and we signed the dotted line.  when I went into the Dragon's Den to sign the paperwork for the extended warranty and junk, I told them there was way I wanted to pay for that crap. 4951

Not sure this qualifies as haggling but....We were in Cozumel and rented a scooter.. It broke down about 15 minutes in to the ride.. so they picked us up. When my husband asked for his money back they all of a sudden they could not understand English.  They kept saying they needed to wait for the manager.. Gave us the run around for a few hours...  They knew we needed to be on the ferry by a certain time so they thought if they stalled long enough we would just walk away.. Not my CHEAP husband..   He took me down the street to a bar, sat me down and ordered me a Rita and left me to walk back to the scooter shop.  About 10 minutes later he shows up and dumps about 25 keys in my lap and tells me if I am not back in an hour get on that ferry.. I should have been worried but I was really enjoying those Ritas...  Anyway, hubby goes back to the scooter place and asks again for his money back....  Guy refuses...  My hubby says  "Amigo, you are going to lose a lot of money"  He then pointed to the board where they keep all the keys, which is now empty....he told the guy my wife is going to throw all those keys off the ferry if I don't get my money back in the next 10 minutes...  lol  The guy all of a sudden understood English and refunded our money and got his keys...  To this day I can not believe my husband did that for one it is out of his character and for another how we did not end up in jail I have no clue..... 4951
