I personally spend a lot of time running between relatives homes just to make sure they are okay and I get to enjoy their presence while they are still here, so I understand your pain.
The best thing that happened in my life was a series of heart attacks that forced me to stay home for about five years. During that time, I spent my fathers last five years of his life with him.
The most rewarding time of my life. Since then, I have changed focus and spend more time with my mother and elderly friends and relatives.
Been doing it for nearly 20 years now and guess what...I'm now one of them. Mom is the only "really old" relative I have and we're celebrating her birthday this weekend (90).
Spend as much time as you can with your dad and let him know how much you love him . You don't have to actually be there to do that! It's only better for you if you can be.
