Anybody ever suspect mold in your home but just don't see it? Fill me in... I ordered a kit...I need answers as to why we are all sick! I am in a rent house and we have been there since September. We have had TWO leaks in the kitchen ceiling since then. The landlord had the actual leak fixed but has not replaced the sheetrock or fixed the giant hole in my ceiling yet! We are constantly sneezing, coughing, asthma attacks, itchy eyes, feeling like shizz, etc...I don't see any actual black mold but I suspect it. I do see dark spots in the ceiling.  Input!? 4951

@FeelinMinnesota:  Cool avatar, BTW.  I would definitely get it checked.  It sounds very suspicious you are having all of those health issues.  Give him an opportunity to replace the sheetrock and fix it correctly, and if not, then take action.https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/cpd/tenant-rights   Pay close attention to the section on Health and Safety.

All homes have mold in them.Outside is full of mold.Cheese is created from mold.Don't necessarily buy into mold fear.98% of the time it is a scam.A leak fixed quickly will usually not cause a mold issue, it is sustained wetness where mold can become a problem. 4951

Just checking - did you just move to the area from way up north?  I am only asking because a lot of people find their allergies, asthma, etc, to be worse here than in other parts of the country.  We've got a lot of natural stuff, and unnatural stuff in the air here.  If you've been here just in a different house, and it only bothered you when you moved to the new house, then maybe it's the house.  4951

We are constantly sneezing, coughing, asthma attacks, itchy eyes, feeling like shizz,

@FeelinMinnesota: I think that is just because of Houston grass, pollen and mold in general! Unless your home was flooded in the past and repaired or has leaks somewhere mold mostly is going to happen in wet areas like the kitchen sink area or the bathroom. We get mold in our shower all the time and I've tried a lot of things but it comes back. We just cleans it really regularly. There was a problem with some crappy drywall imported from China that was in the news  in the past, is your home newer construction or old?

I found a mold spray at the dollar store, and I was surprised to find out that it actually works. I figured hey why not? It's just $1....one of the bathroom showers at my place grows mold very easily, and I spray that spray on it.. Let it sit.. And it goes away with no scrubbing. I probably wouldn't suggest in the kitchen, but in areas such as the bathroom, it works so well. 4951

Call  the city of Houston. I'm thinking it's the department of Health & human services. Just call 311 and ask or go to houstontx.gov.  Someone I knew in Kingwood and was in a rental had a mold problem and the landlord did nothing to fix the problem. I believe an inspector was sent out to check the problem. 4951

We lived in a military housing unit for a few years that had once caught on fire and the pipes had burst and flooded the unit for days (according to the neighbor).  It was vacant for quite awhile before we lived there.  Over the course of those years my hubby and oldest son were so sick, strange stuff.  Hubby's liver enzymes were through the roof and he hardly drank, next step was a liver biopsy.  He had so many odd ailments they tried to convince him he had Fibromyalgia.  We moved and about six months later he followed up with the doctor at the new base and low and behold everything was back to normal.  Son was scheduled for his 2nd set of ear tubes, which we had to cancel because he was sick.  Once we moved he stopped getting ear infections.  It was in the same region where we lived before. No doubt in my mind that they had not cleaned up the mold thoroughly and just replaced the drywall in the unit.  It should have struck me what good shape our walls were for  WWII military housing.  4951

Rarely will household mold be the cause of lung irritation. More often than not it will be midew that forms inside a home, not mold. Regular household bleach will kill most mold and mildew. Including that dreaded 'black mold,' which is actually dirt mixed in with the original water from the leak.Dan the Handyman. 4951
