from cnn.com:

David Bowie, whose ground-breaking sound and chameleon-like ability to reinvent himself made him a pop music fixture for more than four decades, has died. He had just turned 69 last week.

Bowie died Sunday after an 18-month battle with cancer, his publicist Steve Martin told CNN.

"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief," said a statement posted on his official social media accounts.

Neither his publicist nor the statement elaborated on what kind of cancer the singer was fighting. 4951

I read an article  last week that said 26,000 people die every week from some form of cancer world wide. Very sad  that with all the money that has been donated to cancer research that we have not yet found the CURE . I believe once the cure for cancer is found we will know how to cure other diseases . So sad that so many wonderful good people are loosing their lives to cancer. 4951

Too much money to cure it. Sad to say but if you look at the industry, what would go away is astronomical. Salaries etc, heck jobs would fall, hospitals scramble to survive. 4951

My father was the Ground Control that David Bowie mentioned in "Space Oddity" (he served as the longest tenured member of mission control as the lead GC from Apollo all the way up to 4th to last Space Shuttle mission.)Whenever I hear "Space Oddity" I think of my father.  This is sad news and I'm shedding a few tears for a great artist and man.  He was far more than a singer.  He was a tech entrepreneur, supporter of the manned space program and added far more to the world than his music.Ground control to Major Tom.....Check ignition, and may God's love be with you 4951

@beadweaver: Wrong - tremendous money to be made for whoever discovers the cure.  There are plenty of other issues that research doctors and hospitals can move on to work.  If this theory was true, there would not have been a near "cure" for AIDS, better and improving treatments for certain types of cancer, gastric bypass surgery, etc etc.

@ForeCPA90: He has all kinds of amazing stories about his time there.... like meeting Queen Elizabeth and so on.  A few mysterious sightings of strange objects, working with Gene Kranz, the Apollo 13 mission stuff, the two shuttle disasters.  Been in a few movies (documentaries and a few fiction movies ... Armageddon for one.).  Not going to say who/which one he was.. but he's one of the guys you see when Bruce Willis comes out of that giant door at JSC.  He's not well known outside of NASA circles (not a Gene Kranz or Story Musgrave ... one of his friends)... but he did his part.
Unfortunately, he is fading mentally and in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's. Getting to hear the same stories over and over now.. lol.  But a few new ones that I'm pretty sure he shouldn't be telling me. 4951
