I need to replace a toilet in an upstairs bathroom.  We called Kenneth's, but we haven't heard back from him and now his voice-mailbox is full.  So my wife calls John Moore.  They come out and look at the toilet, then immediately want to know about our water heaters, A/C, electrical, etc.  I have two 40 gallon gas water heaters in my attic that were the originals when I bought this house almost 23 years ago (which is extremely old for water heaters).  I know we've been lucky so far and that I need to replace them, so I asked them for a separate quote to replace both water heaters. They came back with a quote of $1,200 for the toilet and $7,400 for the water heaters.... a total of $8,600!!!!I told him he could leave me a copy of the quote but I was going to get other bids.We then called LesCon yesterday and they came out a little after noon today.  They replaced the toilet for right at $300.  I will be calling them for a quote on replacing the water heaters.  My wife now knows NOT to ever call John Moore!  Anyone have similar experiences with other companies? 4951

@Retired_Engineer: That's crazy high!  I would have cracked up laughing.  Out of curiosity, was your wife the one who was mainly around when they came over? I forgot who it was but my father has had people come over and quote him some outrageous prices.  I make sure he calls other people.  If he doesn't do it, I will(I know, I am overbearing)

Seems insane. I put in two new toilets and a hot water heater, fairly simple jobs but my rancher is all on one level. I helped my brother put in a hot water heater upstairs in his home and it sucked. Mainly because he was trying to use pulleys to get it up the attic ladder. Me, I would have left it in the box and slid it up with rope. If your heater is upstairs, not fun installing those.     4951

We had John Moore come by when we had a couple light switches not getting power. They told us the wiring was outdated and needed to be replaced. It would cost $20K but at least we would sleep better at night not having to worry about the house going up in flames due to bad wires. The house was built in 1983. My husband told him to F-off and got someone to fix the issue for $150. 4951

Any company that advertises repeatedly on the radio and/or TV is going to need to pay for that advertising somehow. 4951

I have never had to use a local plumber. Thankfully I can just call my brother in law and the only thing it costs is me having to fix him a roast. 4951

@RogueHippEE:  When I heard the costs, I did smirk and say "That is way too high".   I was here and just asked her to call someone else after we couldn't reach Kenneth's. I had given her some names of plumbers that people had recommended on KDC.  I didn't know she called John Moore (who were NOT on my list) until they showed up.  So I let them give us a quote so she would learn.  She got their name from a friend who recommended them. When we first moved here, I did a lot of traveling, so my wife had to deal with car repairmen, and other repairmen.  Some of them tried to get around the "little lady" to talk to the "man of the house", but she learned to stand her ground and make them deal with her.  We just had the toilet in our Master Bath replaced earlier this year so we knew about what it should cost. She called LesCon based on some positive comments made on KDC.  They even quoted her a figure of $300+/- (any issues) over the phone.  They did need to replace the shutoff valve at the wall, which added $20.

@Retired_Engineer: She probably remembered the Jingle, "Call John, get more"  I don't think you paid too much for toilet install by any means.

Now this makes me more thankful that my husband and I can do everything in this house. We bought two new toilets and by that evening had both installed 4951
