I'm sorry, but I have to post this. Forgive the long post, but it's important.
I travel Woodland Hills Dr every morning between 5-5:45am. Occasionally, I've encountered a group of female joggers on the road...literally, ON THE ROAD. Ladies, I'm speaking to you. This is the third time I've seen you out there, running southbound in the right lane of northbound traffic. Light clothed? Sometimes. Reflective? Not that I've ever seen.
This morning you really scared the heck out of me. If I hadn't been driving in the left lane, people would be waking up to news of an auto-pedestrians accident on Woodland Hills Dr. I would have had people assuming that I was impaired in some way, and you would have been hospitalized...or worse. The fact is, I literally DID NOT SEE your first group until I was right up on you. The only reason I saw the second group is because the first one startled me. For the record, I wasn't speeding, tired or impaired in any way. I just simply did not see you, and that's so scary to me.
Now, I understand the need for exercise. I do it myself. I also understand the unwillingness of jogging on the trail in the dark. I would probably not do that, myself, but jogging in the middle of a main road at 5am is probably not the best safety choice either! Please, I'm begging you for your safety and the safety of others, PLEASE come up with an alternate plan for your morning routine. I would not want any of you to end up as a statistic. 4951

Not fun to run on trails in the dark but that's why I find trails that are lit.And the earbuds are SOOOAnnoying!!! I have a wrist holder and I can listen to music from the speaker and still hear what's going on around me. 4951

I try to walk every day or every other day, I take the same 4 mile route and I often have to literally step off of the trail as a group of joggers come by. Sometimes they are passing and I just hug the edge as a courtesy and other times they are coming towards me and not giving an inch so I just step off. 4951

@Jpgurl: Your first guess is also my first guess.  Get a headlamp, get on the greenbelt.  That's what they are for.  Get off the friggin road, which was made for automobiles.  And I don't give a rat's *** what any parent says, if it is one of the track teams, it is the KID'S responsibility to look for cars when crossing intersections, not the other way around.  I also don't care what the law says here, because it really doesn't matter.  If a runner goes into the intersection and gets hit, it's car 1, runner 0, every time.  Use your brains people.  I am saying all this as an avid runner and marathoner.

Please do share. These weren't kids, which was why it's so surprising to me. You would think adults would have a better sense of safety. I went down that same stretch of road later this morning and noticed that two of the street lights are out, which is probably why I didn't see them until I was right on them. To me, that would be more reason for them to not be in the road! 4951

@buffaloglenn:
I agree. This is one of the reasons it worries me so much: My kids go to KPark, so I'm up and down WH all day. Last year, we saw their friend from KHS cross country get hit by a car right in front of us. Thankfully, he wasn't seriously hit, but he ran right out in front of a car to cross the road! This amazes me! 4951

@starryskies67:Yep - I have also seen, at least three times, where there is a kid (not necessarily a runner, usually just someone going home from school) that wants to cross Woodland Hills, and a car in ONE of the lanes stops completely, without a stop sign or anything, to let them cross.  The kid then darts out, completely unaware of the other lane where someone might not stop because they don't see the kid who is now obstructed by the stopped car.  I don't know about you, but I generally don't just stop in the middle of the road when there isn't a stop sign or light.  It might seem nice to do that, but it's far more dangerous, and the kids need to learn how to properly cross a street anyway, which they won't if people just stop randomly and let them go.  I get so frustrated by this, obviously.  It's way more dangerous then the kids waiting until the street is clear, or crossing at a crosswalk which is what they should be doing anyway.  Sorry for the soapbox this morning... 4951

Isn't this why we pay a huge maintenance fee for 75 miles of paved trails? 4951

I'm on mine too, so no worries. Lol! But we're on the same page. I will stop only at the crosswalks and the stop signs. I've pounded it into my guys heads that on the rare times they find themselves walking, they'd better use crosswalks and the pedestrian crossing signs. If I catch them doing otherwise, then if a car doesn't get them, I will when they get home. 4951

@Chrisinkingwood: I used to step off the trail as well but I got sick of it, I have as much right to the trail as them.  I move to the right as much as is reasonable, not tip toeing or anything, and I square my shoulders.  Problem solved, when they see I am not moving they break ranks and share the trail.

Why are they not running on the trail single file as road traffic? People come both directions.

A while back at the Riverwalk I said to dh enough. We can be walking hand in hand and it set me off that we kept breaking for people.
I said don't let go, see what happens. This couple came eyeball to eyeball before they realized we were not gonna move. They expected us to move and let them pass.

I find it comes down to arrogance and ignorance.
People seem to think they are more important than anyone and we need to get out of their way, allow them their space. Joggers too. More adults than children. Although the kids seem pretty aggressive when they are running and driving.

They are complete idiots. I run in the dark pretty much every morning. I stay on the greenbelts. On my swim mornings come back from lifetime fitness, I've come close to running over these idiots several times. No lights. No reflective clothing. No brains. 4951
