My unit is a year and a half old and I've had more problems with it than I should. It's set on 74 and it was 76 in here an hour ago, now it's 77. Is that normal because it's so hot outside? 4951

Mine is working fine but then again we have a 5 ton on our smaller home. If it's not cooling you might want to call who installed it and make them charge it up. Sounds like it's low on freon 4951

@topcat:
It is pretty hot and that sun is really beating down. My AC guy told me when that happens to check the temperature at the vents. When running it should be blowing at least the thermostat setting. 4951

I'm told by our AC people that your AC should be able to keep the temperature inside your home 20 degrees cooler than the outside temperature.   4951

@topcat: No.Is the unit cycling on and off?  If it is the thermostat may be messed up.  If it continually runs and you fall behind you may need a recharge. Did it keep up last summer on the hot days?

@PedroDePacas: This is just what they told us.... maybe they are full of it?!?  One thing I know myself.... our older unit works MUCH better than our new unit ever will. The new unit overheats and shuts down, the older one never does.

@ET: Yes. I always get my checks done, and they came out a few weeks ago to check it because it wasn't cooling. I guess I have to call againEmoticon

@topcat: Did they put refrigerant in it then to get it going?  If so and it needs it now, you have a good leak. Hopefully under warranty

AT night I turn mine down to 70 - when I get up in the morning its usually about 73.  I think it's just too dang hot outside...  escpecially with a two story the upstairs struggles. 4951

@topcat: Get a thermometer and set it in one of your vents for a few minutes.  It should be cooling the air to -20 degrees or so compared to the temp in your house, so if it's 80 inside, your inside air should be blowing at about 60 degrees at your vent.  If not, the AC isn't fully charged or you have a problem with the air distribution (ducts).AC guys are notorious for not sizing the AC right (unit too small, and we all know bigger is better) on newer homes, because the builders don't really care as long as the house will sell; then it becomes the new owners' problem.

We upgraded a few years back and really went whole hog on a big Trane 19 SEER unit outside and a new furnace to match inside. At night we keep it at 74 or so, during the past few nights I cut it a degree as I found myself uncomfortable in between AC cycles. During the day if no one is here the programable thermostat keeps it at 76 during the day and goes to 74 at 4PM as we go into the evenings. Sometimes I click it down to 72 and it drops pretty fast. We have a typical older style 2 story in SWH neighborhood with a vaulted ceiling family room and an open hallway upstairs connected so air moves around pretty well. A good programable thermostat is a good idea 4951
