I know when I was in high school it was an unsaid thing that girls had to be a certain size to be on sports or dance team. However, when did this become okay by our society? When you get to college or pro girls of all sizes are represented, but not here in Kingwood. Skinny doesn't equal healthy and "thick" doesn't mean unhealthy yet we think this. How am I supposed to develop a positive body image when our coaches and such don't!? Okay rant over! 4951

Not really sure what you're talking about. There were a few "big" girls on the dance team at my school. And on the softball team. And the soccer team.

I think more often than not, the "bigger" girls aren't typically found on high school teams because they simply can't always compete at the same level as the more athletic body typed girls. Not everyone gets to make the team. And if you happen to be the slowest kid, it doesn't matter what your size is...you probably won't make the cut. 4951

I ask myself this all the time! Ever since I've moved here I haven't had much positive body vibes. A lot of people seem to think looks are more important than education. And  I constantly hear guys calling girls who are slightly bigger than the others fat. Most people don't understand that being "too thin" or "too thick" is most likely because of genes or even a disease. Looking forward to the day people start to realize these things. 4951

Coaches don't choose based on looks.  They choose based on ability.  If you want to be an athlete then you have to work out and practice to become a better athlete. 4951

Both my girls have done sports at KMS and KPARK (cheer, swim, track, volleyball, basketball) and I have not noticed this. There are girls of all sizes on all the teams. Maybe It's because girls that are more active in sports and spend more time practicing are less likely to be overweight and more likely to be better at their sport and that is why they are getting picked by the coaches for the team. When my daughter first tried out for volleyball in 7th grade she had never played and did not make the team. She tried to pull the "coaches have favorites" and I explained that the girls who got picked have been playing volleyball much longer than her. She worked all year learning how to serve and hit and went to the summer volleyball camps and made it the next year. Practice and skill got her on the team, not coaches favorite.  4951

I have coached 10 and under through college age and body type has nothing to do with it. I am not entering a beauty pagent with my team, we are competing in athletes. Skill and attitude is what coaches look for. Keep the attitude part in mind. When I coached college I traveled the country to recruit. I also participated in some junior Olympic scouting. For both teams attitude was a huge component. No matter how good you are, if your attitude sucks and you are uncoachable, no one will touch you. And vice versa, if you have a good attitude and are willing to work and follow a coaches direction that makes you a very desirable player. I turned away several excellent players from my teams over the years because of terrible attitudes. I have also seen a correlation between the players attitude and the parents... 4951

Skinny doesn't automatically mean athletic or even healthy, and it's a shame if high school coaches can't see that. I feel like little girls start worrying about their bodies way too early. Last year I had a third grade student who obsessed about her diet because the toddler sized shirts she was wearing were getting tight. Emoticon 4951

@Pi: In 3rd grade?? I'd be looking at parents' input on that not coaches.
