Do you start letting your child ride their bike to school?  I'm nowhere close to doing that, but I'm just curious. 4951

Mine is already riding her bike to the stores nearby but I still maintain a watchful eye. 4951

Mine is 8. I've started thinking about the same. 3rd grade? 4th grade? 5th grade? 8th? What's the norm? 4951

Mine is 7.  We live in SWL and I feel like it's kind of far for her to ride to school alone.  I'm just curious how everyone else handles it. 4951

I rode my bike to school when I was in Kindergarten.  I had to cross Archer Ave., which was the equivalent of 1960.  4951

Depends on the kid. Some kids can handle things like that and some are just not the sharpest crowns in the box if you know what I mean. It also depends on their route to school. Busy intersections, ect. 4951

Alone or with someone? My oldest (going into 3rd) wants to do this next year, but he has a little brother going into K (same school). I think I'm going to wait one more year and then spend next Summer riding the route with them and determine if they are capable of doing it at least on the days I work from home. We're about 1 to 1.5m from the school. 4951

When mine had to start riding her bike to get to summer swim practice I rode my bike with her the first couple times to check out the route and make sure she would be safe. She had to go from woodland hills to elm grove. Once I saw it was safe I let her go on her own. 4951

I make sure my girls stick together. I feel there is safety in numbers. My biggest concern is the Kingwood drivers. They drive like idiots here in Elm Grove and I'm sure every other neighborhood too. 4951

It's about a mile and a half to the school, I think.  They are all residential streets, so that's a good thing.  I might see if she can ride the greenbelt all the way.  (But not this year, yet) 4951

I started letting him ride to school at 10.By then he had a little more maturity and was less trusting. He knew how to get there at 5 but I wasn't sure if he would have been able to handle a stranger approach properly before then. 4951
