I haven't found NOLA to be any more dangerous than Houston to be honest. Just have common sense. I stay in the FQ & have never had any issues.
That said, you should head down to to the French Market, have benets at Cafe du Monde, and arrange to do a walking ghost tour at one of the places down there. Walk around, shop, then for lunch split a muffalatta at the General Grocery place there on Ursalines. Or get poboys at Johnnys (I recommend the roast beef). Check out St Louis cathedral, it's gorgeous inside. Take a donkey carriage ride when your feet get tired. If you like, hit up Pat Obrians, Bourbon St isn't too much for a 16 year old during the day, night time is another story! We took a bus tour years ago & it was a great way to see lots of stuff, including the cemeteries. Be sure to jump on the street car & check out the garden district. New Orleans is such a gorgeous place, and the locals are friendly! You'll be exhausted when you leave, but will also be planning your next visit!
@OhHappyPets: Honestly Houston has Nothing on NOLA( ESP FQ) here lately. I'm a seasoned traveller- Dh is hardcore ( think back country in 3rd world countries). If he's saying BE Careful - then BE Careful. Trust me Ive been in some iffy situations and know how to deal. Of Course you need to be aware. Dh warned me because he knows me- I've been in places Im pretty sure not many people have seen in the FQ or NOLA. I'm not saying don't go- just be very careful
