Happy New Year everyone!!!! I have a couple of things that I need to get done to my car, IE rear differential fluid change & my check engine light just came on for the coolant thermostat? .....I always go to Kwik Kar on 1960 but they are going to charge me $170.00 to change the fluid alone....this seems a bit steep, but I'm not really sure? I've been very loyal there but maybe I should make a change....any suggestions on a cheaper, dependable place to take my car & get these things done or is $170 about the price....he said they have to 'pump it out'. I wish I knew more about this kind of thing its so easy to get taken advantage of.

I really like Sal's Auto. I find they are very fair in pricing. And they are very NICE , decent people - they've worked with a friend of mine who had trouble paying her bill and worked out a payment plan with her.
They're located behind the NAPA auto parts on North Park - right at the intersection with that Encino Car wash and Goodwill drop-off site.

Auto shops in Aldine area are very cheap and reasonable and they do work hard for you compared to all these mechanics in the local area. 4951

Is the $170 just for the differential fluid or other stuff?  That seems really high.Call somebody like Jiffy Lube and ask them what they charge to do it - that should give you a gauge. 4951

We use either Kings Crossing Auto Repair or the place at the Shell station on WLH and Northpark for all repairs and upkeep.$170 sounds like a lot, but they have to put it on a lift, remove the rear end cover, drain the oil, replace the cover gasket, and refill with special oil.Why are you changing the rear end oil?  That oil lasts a long time unless something is wrong with it. 4951

I've used Kevin's Car Care for several repairs, very reasonable price wise. 4951

@Haybugg: What is your vehicle year, make and model? That price might very well be good, I know some rear diff oil can cost north of $25 per bottle and "most" full size trucks normally take about 4 bottles and if its a limited slip there is another charge for that little bottle.

^^^ Indeed. Yr/Make/Model is very relevant here! The correct specification fluid for the BMW limited slips I work on is $55 per 500ml bottle, 188 ring gear cases take 3 bottles, 210 ring gear cases take 4 bottles. Chaching! 4951

@Haybugg: it takes 75w140 GL-5 synthetic fluid, less than $20 a quart for your favorite flavor at auto zone , 3 quarts should be more than enough. pm me if you like.

@iCarr is correct. V6 won't have a LSD so regular old gear old is just fine.75w140 is the correct fluid. The case looks small so I can't imagine it takes more than 2qt.The drain plug and fill plugs are readily accessible and on opposing sides of the case. Actual labor time would be about 20 minutes or so. 4951

Haybugg.. sounds like iCarr is your solution to the problem. According to what MTech said, it sounds like you will probably pay too much if you go to Kwick Kar. I wouldn't even consider Jiffy lube if I were you. 4951
