I usually check my bank accounts online at least twice a day. And especially after I have been shopping just to verify my accounts. I came home this afternoon and decided to look at my Visa account AND there was a $400 charge pending from the Marshalls on W. Gray in Houston. Luckily, I called right away and I am not liable. But, they had to cancel my credit card and I won't get a new one for 5 to 7 days. Scary to think someone had my account # Emoticon 4951

Happened to me last month but it was a 50 dollar charge for something they ordered online. Took a few days but they added funds back in for me. I also had to change my card number and get new cards and filed a police report through the bank.Thieves...hate them! 4951

Update: I called Marshall's customer service number and they said the person bought one item for $799 at Marshalls, used 2 different credit cards that were both swiped. That means they had made up a fake credit card with my number on it!! 4951

Happens all the time. I have a friend who got her Identity stolen from some ex con. Had her social and got her Id with friends name. It's a horrible violation. Hubby and I have found out the we love the credit union we bank with. If there is any activity on our debit card that is suspect they flag the purchase and it doesn't go through. We were in Miami last summer and we both used our cards. THey texted us to call fraud immediately. Alot to be said for a banking institution that is on the ball.  4951

@cgm10sne1:

I had something similar with my credit union. The problem was they called the home number to verify usage and not my cell. I was in New Mexico and not monitoring messages at the house.

I have removed the home number from the account so they have to reach me by cell only now. 4951

My bank has been pretty good.  I do check often but not every day.  That would be a good habit. 4951

be careful what you order online,, especially when it comes to things like for the kids school. We ordered some stuff a few years ago, and then 2 days later I had over $600 in charges at macy's, best buy, and some other store. We suspected people who had access to credit accounts at that company.... based in Houston. 4951

A few years ago Chase alerted us that our CC was used in California for $8000.00. When I received
 the call I thought they were scamming me. The guy must have thought he had a crazy woman on the phone.  It just surprised me that the companies have to have fraud depts. & monitor their clients credit cards. 4951

My wife's credit cards were stolen a couple of months ago.I haven't reported them stolen though.  Whoever has them seems to be spending much less than she ever did!  <rimshot>On a serious note, I was on a business trip in Arkansas a few years back and swiped my check-card for lunch.  Someone hacked the restaurant's system and my peers and I ended up with charges all over the world.  One peer was Singapore, another Hong Kong.  Mine was used in Manchester, England.  My bank took care of it but it took a few days and the money was not available for a while.  I feel bad for those who are less fortunate and don't have money available during that time in another account or something. 4951

A friend of mine named James Williams is a truck driver.  James has a unique look.  He keeps his red hair long, in a pony tail.  He's tall, lanky, and always wears faded jeans and a blue or red or white t-shirt.One day he exited a restaurant and was surrounded by police pointing guns at him.  They cuffed him, and asked if he was "James Williams".  Yes, he said.  They took him to the station and began interrogating him about robberies.He told them they had the wrong guy."You're James Williams according to your license, right?" asked an officer.James "Yes, but I didn't rob anyone."They then showed him a photo of the criminal James Williams.  He was a lanky guy, with long red hair in a ponytail, wearing blue jeans and a white t-shirt.  He was James' doppelganger.Luckily, police caught the other James Williams the same day, and the good James Williams was released. 4951

I use Chase for checking, savings, and credit card.  I usually check my accounts about every 1-2 weeks.  Sometimes more often if I've made a purchase from a new place of business. 4951

I am neurotic about checking our accounts now.  I pulled our credit report a while ago, and there were several things on there that weren't ours.  We very rarely use credit cards anymore, so everything is by check, cash, or debit.Yes, I am one of the ones that will hold up the check out line because I am writing out a check!!! 4951

@Retired_Engineer: I use Chase as well but I am online almost every day! So far we've been happy with them. 4951

@ctl74:  I started with a Chase card, but we banked at Bank United.  They got taken over by Washington Mutual, then they got taken over by Chase.  So now I'm all in with Chase.

@Puzzles: Just to give you a heads up... you are making a mistake by mostly using checks and debit cards. Anything tied to your bank account leaves you more vulnerable to thieves. Credit cards provide consumer protection against misuse of your card. Most credit card companies also provide protections against faulty merchandise. Some banks can take weeks or months to replace your stolen funds back into your checking account. A thief can empty your entire account before you even know it, and then you are stuck waiting for the bank to investigate and resolve your issues. I would just warn to be careful using checks and debit cards.
