Anyone tried magic jack for phone service?  Since we moved here, we have not set up a home phone since we have 4 cell phones in the family.  I have not really felt comfortable with that at all, especially when I am working.  Does anyone have any ideas about a cheap home phone service? 4951

We had it a few years back and it worked but was sometimes fuzzy. We ended up just switching over to Vonage and had that for 2 years prior to moving down here and were really satisfied with that. We haven't gotten land line service since we've been down here yet. 4951

If you just get basic dial tone service through your local phone provider, you can use Google Voice for long distance, caller ID, and voice mail. You can even record conversations. The only thing it doesn't provide is call waiting, but if you have a cell phone as a backup, that shouldn't be a big deal. It's a digital service like Vonage, but it's free.  4951

But I thought kids needed cell phones for emergencies.  If they have cell phones for emergencies, why do you need a separate home phone? 4951

there are a bunch of different ways you can have phone service besides the traditional landline. there is also skype internet service and a few other others like yahoo messenger phone and so onthere is a phone service called ooma also. buy the hardware and all you pay are the monthly fees and taxes. it's a voip system'http://ooma.com/http://www.consumersearch.com/voip/ooma 4951

We have a home phone line number to which is connected with Centurylink. We don't have a phone plugged in anywhere in this house, but if we did, we could dial 911 for emergency only. I don't have a clue what our home phone number even is...I'd have to look on the paperwork from a year ago.  4951

I have had magic jack a couple of years and  I would say my biggest complaint would be the unwanted soliciting calls.  It is still worth it for the money.  I don't find a problem with the clarity. 4951
