Do you give your children's teachers and end of the year gift? I'm just curious. I taught preschool for several years, and a lot of you know I've been a paraprofessional for 5 years as well.
WE LOVE GIFTS! Even a thank you card with no gift is much appreciated. It's a tough job! It's nice to know people are thankful for our hard work and the care we show the children.
If you haven't bought a gift or simply taken a few minutes to write a thank you note, there's still time. A few nice words mean so much to a teacherEmoticon 4951

We got our first grade teacher a thank you card, that both I and my son wrote a note in, and a $10 Stbx card. Small, but something. 4951

I usually make old fashioned candy or truffles. And if the kiddos really like them I'll make lunch so they can take their teacher out, then they can sit and chit chat. They really like that. Its a little more work but makes everyone feel special. 4951

This year we got them a coffee mug that said "you are a new chapter in our child's life" . Something like that. Also got them a card. All 3 teachers loved it. 4951

When I was in school, I handmade plastic canvas baskets and matching tissue box covers tailored to whatever subject they taught. Then I'd pack the basket with homemade treats(mini cheesecakes and pies, cookies, brownies, candies etc) Didn't cost much money and everybody loved it. When I have kids, I will probably do the same for their teachers. 4951

My opinion is probably going to be unpopular with quite a few, but  I no longer buy teacher gifts. I have 5 kids. I did  give gifts when the first two were in elementary. I had a bad experience with a teacher expecting gifts and actually supplying a list to the kids of preferred items. I found this tacky and rude.  Two of my five are just out of college and the other 3 span middle and high school. If a teacher goes above and beyond in helping my child I will send in a gift card and a note, but otherwise I do not give gifts for doing what they are paid to do.  I do not get gifts for doing my job well, I get paid a salary. I take pride in my profession. It would be considered inappropriate to accept gifts. Thousands of people are without jobs, kids are going without food. There are many professions that are difficult and do not have great compensation, they do not expect gifts nor are allowed to accept them. I give to the school and help with supplies. 4951

I did the gift thing in elementary school only. Once your kids get to middle school, they could have 7 different teachers. And in high school, I think the parents are definitely over buying gifts, etc. by that point. Plus, you do not know the teachers in middle and high school like you know their elementary teachers. 4951

I keep all the cards/ notes that have been written to me in the back of a drawer. When I have had a bad day, I read them again to remember that I do make a difference. 4951

@landlady:
Why don't you spend a year teaching, then see if YOU wouldn't like a thank you card. I don't presume to know challenges of any other professions than what I have had. I've been in a war, a medical assistant, homemaker and teacher. I can tell you the most challenging was teaching. How dare you judge all teachers by a crappy one that gave you a list. I don't often get ticked on KDC, but I am passionate about education, give 110% when I am in a classroom and will NOT be disrespected, even on a message board.

I've been in higher education for 20 years and maybe have received 1-3 gifts in that time. I don't expect it, but certainly appreciate the gesture.

My wife has been an elementary teacher at a very poor school for many years and gets gifts often. Many times it's something homemade or plant cuttings. We have an oleander that is about 8 feet tall now, but when she got it, it was just a cutting stuck in some dirt.

Giving out a list is tacky and would guarantee me giving nothing, but most of my kids teachers get something small and usually homemade. 4951

My son teaches at a high school and my daughter teaches at an elementary school.  My wife also used to teach at a pre-K school here in Kingwood.  I think all teachers appreciate a card/note or some little gesture, but should not expect it.  Last year, my son was teaching at a middle-school and the things that he cherished the most were cards/notes.  Now that he's at a high-school, he knows it's unlikely that any of the students will do anything, but it would mean a lot to him if they did.Teachers put up with a lot of BS and are not very well paid for it.  Both of my kids went into education to make a difference, not to draw a big paycheck.  4951

@topcat, my post was not intended to be disrespectful in any way. I simply answered your post of "do you give childrens teachers end of the year gifts?" I answered honestly. I do not judge all teachers by that one experience. I donate for the luncheon for the teachers on teacher appreciation day, I do write thank you notes, and I do give gifts to the teachers that put an extra effort into my child. I also come from a family of educators. I was a special education advocate, I have volunteered for the special Olympics for years. I have adopted 3 children from the system, one being special needs. I am well aware of the struggles teachers face and do not disregard them. My oldest son is serving in the Navy. He is sitting off the coast of North Korea. When he flies home, he does not accept upgrades in flights, free meals or gifts. He also faces some pretty difficult and unrewarding challenges. He is also not compensated very well. Just because I don't agree with giving gifts does not mean that I disrespect you or the teaching profession. 4951

Since we're being honest on this thread, I'll throw in my opinion too... Emoticon

I think we've gone overboard. Teacher Appreciation WEEK? In addition to the huge breakfasts and lunches served by the PTO all week, a letter was sent out with a schedule of what types of gifts students should bring each day. A schedule! Demanding five days of gifts! It was really uncomfortable. I love my kids and I love when they care about what I do for them, but really and truly - a thank you note will always be the best gift!!! 4951

@Pi:

I totally agree with you, but remember that does not happen everywhere. I am a teacher and we don't do that nor would I ever think of doing that. We barely get a thank you from our useless admin! I got two gifts this year and it was so thoughtful! Wasn't even expecting anything. A card or note is definately sufficient and anything else is a bonus. 4951

@landlady One thing I enjoy about this forum is that we can speak our mind, which we both did. I never expected gifts, I'm just saying that it is nice to know a parent appreciates what you do. Having a special needs child, and being from a family of educators, you must be aware of the unique challenges teachers encounter daily. I agree that the teacher appreciation week list of daily gifts is over the line and tacky. The way your post was worded when you spoke of not giving gifts for a job you get paid for *did* offend me, because I can rock a classroom! It's not always easy to discern a person's meaning through text, so I appreciate your response. I am very well aware that there are some that don't deserve to have the title of "educator". I've seen them, worked with them and had them as teachers for my sons. So, if you're speaking of *those* folks, I agree with you. Not even a thank you note for them. 4951
