My daughters air/heat unit needs to be replaced.  A company came out today and said that the whole unit is shot. The heat and air have been running at the same time causing her electric bill to be sky high!! We could not get it warm in there....then we could not get it cooled off!!  Said we are lucky there wasn't a fire due to the elements getting very hot.  I don't know anything about air/heat units but I do knowt that they said it would cost us around 9000.00 for an entire unit plus replacing the ducts that have been ruined  due to moisture.  She is a single mom with a one year old. Does anyone know what kind of charges are reasonable for this type of work? This company wanted to put in a Trane with a 10 year warranty.  Any advice on who to call?? Thanks 4951

My furnace was out today and I called Cool summers and warm summers.  It only cost me $120 to have them repair it. Give him a call (281)221-4075 4951

If none of the options are affordable, buy heating blankets (Biddeford is sturdy all around & it's the generic for big name brands).  You can also get window AC units at good prices.  4951

$9000 is just about right to completely replace a unit. Ours went out mid-year and it cost us over $10,000. 4951

@RetiredAFWife:
But that's not a long-term solution. The coldest part of the Winter is yet to come and Houston Summers are unbearable. It might be time to move into a smaller place or maybe a rental where things like AC and heating units are covered by the owner. 4951

$9000 sounds kind of high for a house unit, but maybe it is huge? 4951

And the heating and cooling at the same time thing sounds fixable. unless you actually did burn it up.  They are usually modular so you can swap out parts without doing the whole thing.  Did they offer to repair at all? Agree, Fuhr is worth a call. 4951

@madie324: madd air. They are a family owned kw company that provides amazing service. I got a top of the line a/c unit, furnace and insulation for around 7000 last year.

The last quote to replace my downstairs system was about 6500 for a 16 SEER.  It continues to run without problems so I haven't pulled the trigger.  I would definitely shop around.  4951
