It is loaded for me as well. I cringed when people said Obama was Hitler. I remember when there were people outside the Kingwood post office with those signs of Obama with Hitler's mustache. By the time I left the post office, those people had been told they had to go. But it took ME saying something. How in the world had we gotten to where that was okay was my question then.
If you chose not to know, you still don't know, and never will
#msg6048238Those immigrants who feel they have lived through a REIGN of TERROR here in America might not feel America is the land they hoped for then.
#msg6048382ExCTGuyInTX : **** happens.
What if you happen to be Renée Goode or your husband happen to be Alex Pretti?
You might feel differently, wouldn't you?
One would only hope the machinations of government could happen that fast but then I guess we would all get whiplash each time it swings back and forth
I just spoke to someone by phone yesterday who is in a detention center. So yeah, I think I speak with some 2nd experience. It's heartbreaking.
She said it is freezing inside and that they deliberately keep it ice cold under some notion that it keeps detainees subdued . She said people are sick including herself. She has requested to be able to go to the clinic but her request is ignored.
Yesterday she said she was two minutes late getting to breakfast because she was helping another lady who had just been sent there and was distraught. She said when she entered the mess hall the guard slammed the door and refused to let her in to eat.
They move them from dormitory to dormitory presumably to keep them from finding comfort and support from each other.
Body hygiene is an issue - they don't have laundry facilities, deodorant or shampoo . They aren't allowed to be given these items by visitors who only can see them behind a glass partition with an intercom phone like in jail.
This is a woman that has lived here since she was a child. She was brought here when she was 6. . This country is all she has ever known - as far as I know she doesn't even have family in Mexico.
Her applications for legal status have been lost the maze of government bureaucracy. Anyone who has been down this road knows what a nightmare it is. She applied as soon as she came of age.
She owns her home, her car, has her own company and pays taxes and has the records to prove it. She attended school in this area all the way from elementary to high school to community college. She does not have any criminal record.
She was picked up for unpaid traffic ticket. She was too afraid to go to traffic court because of her status and the times we are living in. She spent 3 days in Harris County Jail to erase her fine. Upon release from Jail she was immediately turned over to ICE .
Yeah, so explain to me how she is a threat to our nation and our freedoms. Make it make sense as it seems that some of you are hell bent on painting all detainees with the same broad brush . My heart is broken for her. I have obtained an attorney, written letters to the judge that will precede over her hearing , and today I even called the mayor's office. No one has been able to offer much hope for her situation. And the crappiest part of this is she is not unique. History will not be kind in judging these times.
And people just want to holler
"Deport!" with no firsthand experience of the heavy handed and unjust things being done to these human being .

I dont like everything about it, but there was a bipartisan bill underway in 2024. (trump convinced some republican senators to withdraw their support so it did not pass). It would have been a solid step toward real immigration reform.

Concerning what is happening now:
ICE should stop hunting immigrants in order to fill quota targets and should instead resume their duties of carrying out designated apprehensions.
ICE should stop the practice of wearing masks.
Detention centers should be available for "on the spot" inspection. Their population should be critically evaluated to identify those who really dont belong there. (which is surely alot). These centers should not house a huge population of immigrant round-ups but should just be used for those whose cases were in progress.
A path to citizenship should be in place. IMO legal status (not citizenship) should be granted to those who have been here for some time and are law-abiding.
#msg6048413My brother is a pediatrician and works in the detention centers so don't even GO THERE! They are not in anything close to a concentration camp!!!
#msg6048705because I really wish we could be the recipients of your tired and poor yearning to breathe free.
What kind of a question is that? Surely you got the tone of what I said, but if it was unclear, I meant I wish we lived in a world where that was possible.
I am angry because I dont like this kind of mistreatment of immigrants (some in my family). What Has you so worked up?
What do you mean how does it work? The detainees have access to medical care. Were you told they do not? For him in particular since January of 2025. He "retired" from his own practice because he was burned out. He is actually a pediatric oncologist but isn't serving as that; just as a pediatrician.
Dont get defensive about that. All I have heard is they dont have access to care or at least very minimal access.
I still dont understand your point of view.
Does this effect you directly?
I wasn't defensive, I was trying to understand why you seem surprised they had pediatricians there.
