#msg6021154They are not only clearing the vines though. They are clear cutting smaller native trees as well. I've heard from one of the HOA members that they used one of our greenbelts in Greentree as a "test". He said that they were only supposed to remove anything 4" diameter or less. They took everything from 36" diameter down. It looks terrible and the residents that back up to what used to be a lush beautiful greenbelt now have an eyesore. Now the greenbelt is overgrown with weeds and vines. Very few trees. The heavy removal equipment broke up the greenbelt path in a lot of areas. Of course that hasn't been repaired or the park bench that's rotting away (for over a year now). I think our time, funds and resources should be better spent. Clearing vines is on thing, clear cutting like fern gully is another. Don't pee on a rock and tell me it's raining.

PlaneCrazy : Who voted for Council Member FF? There are more important things but he want to play Mr. Lumberjack all the time. Why does Kingwood always get stuck with a "Dud" as a Council member. Vote him out.

FriggandFreya :
That us an optimal age for trees which are well taken care of, not median trees. If the trees are harvested, the sale of the wood would pay for the harvest and the new plantings.

kingwooddiscgolf : it is not hard to find people who will come in and clear cut for the wood. KINGWOOD should be able to get grants to do native and green plantings. The COH also can apply for grants and budget it. It is possible. The medians in many many places are dangerous.

WahineB : You aren't on a timber plot dropping trees with no care where they fall.

Hate it. It is called the "livable forest " for a reason.

Trees and woods play a vital role in reducing flooding by slowing down the flow of rainwater, absorbing rainwater and reducing erosion.

Driving down Kingwood Drive about an hour and and noticed the areas that have been "cleared " of the vines. Have new vines growing up the remaining trees. Some vines look like they are 30-40 feet tall already. Plus many more new sprouts coming up.

I wonder what the maintenance plan is going forward.

PlaneCrazy : I didn't realize it took an hour to drive down KW Drive. It takes much less than that on a bike. Maybe I'm behind in driving awareness. In any event, elimation of the vines is an essential step in the preservation of the trees, and their canopy that provides shade, which in turn reduces unwanted underbrush - another nuisance that is being addressed!

kingwooddiscgolf : Actually, there is a wooded park behind my fence. I have 10 trees in the backyard. 2 are very large Southern Magnolias, The rest are native trees. In the front I have 6 Oak trees (Live, water and red) and 2 large Crepe Myrtle. We trim trees at least yearly, some more frequently. While we do not have Loblolly Pine in our yard, there are 4 large ones that have dropped huge branches in the yard and on the fence. We campaigned with our HOA last year and many pines were found to have the beetles, so they were cut down and removed. A diseased tree of any kind is dangerous to property, drivers, runners, etc. I understand the problem. There is no livable forest without trees, but we must continually demand for trees to be maintained or be removed. They are no different than any other structure...except they continually grow larger.

Healthy trees, yes. Scrub brush and vines, no. Diseased trees, no.

PlaneCrazy :
Wasn't Fern Gully cleared because of flood abatement and getting the drainage ditches cleared out?
That is a totally different project than medians on Kingwood drive.
I understand people's views changed considerably, but isn't having adequate drainage restored worthwhile?

I am mixed on this subject, I like them cleared and mowed around the trees to discourage the undergrowth getting out of control and smothering healthy trees, if maintaince is not continued they will need cleaning in another 5 years. Driving safety is only a concern at the crossing, they should always be kept clean.

WahineB :
Thank you,
I was referring to an old kids movie ( tongue in cheek). In the movie it portrayed forests being destroyed and cleared for the lumber without regard to the environment.

These particular greenbelts in Greentree were decimated under the guise of removing "dangerous " trees damaged by Beryl. In fact they came through and removed a large percentage of good healthy old growth trees with the few damaged trees and all undergrowth. I was told it was a test clearing project for the median clearing project.

Yes. Those vines are suffocating the trees. Should have been done years ago and maintained!

anonymous : We are strongly opposed to this initiative. The Kingwood medians are not "neglected and overgrown." They were left deliberately in a natural state to give the feeling of a forest community. This is (or used to be) "The Livable Forest", not the livable park or golf course. Leave the medians alone!
