Kingwood Drive medians are being cleared

What do you think about the clearing of the forest in the median of Kingwood Drive ....as well as Northpark, Woodland Hills and Lk Hou Pkwy? There's an ongoing effort by the City of Houston and others to do much more of this. If you are opposed to it, you can go to Change.org and sign a petition called "Stop the deforestation of Kingwood's forests". You can also write an email to Frederick.Flickinger and Twila.Carter (@houstontx.gov) in opposition of this. They need to hear your voices!

I like it. There is forest and there is overgrown undergrowth. The crossovers are easier to see on coming traffic.
The maintenance will be difficult.

I totally agree with you. Don't want anyone to get in a crash because they can't see.

I believe this topic has already been discussed. They're clearing out invasive vines that are choking the woods. Also helps with visibility.

I moved here for the trees and the shade, and I was worried about them clearing the medians too. But it's for the best.

The life of these types of pines is 40-50 years. Right now they are not taking the large trees down, but it will come...maybe with another Beryl, or a hurricane. Or a flood that saturates.

Here needs to be a plan for each median for maintenance and tree removal and replacement with trees that are more suited to the medians.

Loblolly Pines can live 200-300 years, not 40-50

I am hoping this means they are just clearing all of the vines, and kind of 'overgrowth;, which is good. Some parts are just a tangle, and it would be good to see Through the trees, with those left intact.

anonymous : I like it! I think it is great to be able to see through the woods. It is wonderful for the trees to be able to grow. All those vines growing up into our trees and totally covering them, are killing them. There is no way to just get rid of the vines. When we have a storm, if the trees have vines growing on them they get weighted down with water and are more likely to break or become uprooted. We lost a lot of our trees during the last storm because of this. We also had more loss of power and a longer recovery time because of the trees that hit power lines. Clearing the underbrush is a good thing!

LittleTexas : I don't think it should be FL but the OP used these words:

Frederick.Flickinger and Twila.Carter (@houstontx.gov)

I wonder if that was enough to do it.

Why would anyone object to cleaning the medians for safety & esthetic reasons. Cutting the underbrush, kudzu, and invasive species is an excellent use of the exorbitant water (tax) bills and property taxes we pay COH & Harris County. It looks trashy and unbecoming to our neighborhoods in KW!

What others decide is fine with me. The pine trees are annoying. Nasty trees. Clean out the vines is also fine with me.

Fred Flickinger our city council member for District E had a town hall meeting on Tuesday September 22nd at the Kingwood Community Center.
In attendance as well were at large council members Twyla Carter, Julian Ramirez, and Sallie Alcorn.
There was ample opportunity for an hour to discuss the any matters with him and his team and any of the other council members before the town hall presentations.
This topic has been discussed ad nauseum on KDC and other local groups on ND and FB.
Information on how you can reach out to Fred's team is on his FB page:
www.facebook.com/fre ddistricte

You can also get information on the median clearing by attending either the KSA Parks Meetings on the first Thursday of each month or the KSA Public Safety Meetings on the second Wednesday of each month. District E has a representative at each of them almost without fail. This can give you another opportunity to speak to them directly.
