#msg6020690Cbear : The change happened in 2025. May 2025: The Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 23, which increased the additional school-district homestead exemption for homeowners 65+ or disabled. June 16, 2025: Governor Greg Abbott signed SB 23 into law. His office announced that the senior/disabled homestead exemption would increase to $200,000 when combined with the general homestead exemption. November 4, 2025: Texas voters approved the related constitutional amendment. The Texas Comptroller confirms that voters approved increasing the additional senior/disabled exemption to $60,000. Tax year 2025: The constitutional amendment was made effective retroactively to January 1, 2025. What does a senior homeowner actually get? For the 2025 tax year, a qualifying homeowner age 65+ receives: $140,000 general school-district homestead exemption + $60,000 additional 65+ exemption = $200,000 total exemption from the school-district portion of property taxes. One important clarification: this is not a $200,000 deduction from the home's purchase price or a $200,000 refund. It means the first $200,000 of the home's taxable value is exempt from school-district property taxes. Also, the senior exemption does not automatically eliminate county, city, or other local property taxes. Those taxing entities have their own exemptions and rules. Go to the State of Texas government site for forms. This was on the ballot. You probably voted for it.
#msg6020661FRUGAL : It's in everyone's interest, retired or not, with kids or never had kids, to make sure the next generation has a decent education.

Theose that "opt out" because they paid their full share should not get the benefit of what those they chose to not educate generate. That newfangled drug that my now 15 year old grandkid invents, um sorry. Who you? Where were you when he took AP Chemistry?
Through the ages the system has generated prigress for all. It hurts a bitt times but it works.
This has always been a slippery slope. Certainly understand the need to support younger generations to have a future. But for how long seems to be the question. Paying for decades, and it is even more of an issue if you never had kids in schools, seems to be a long time. The over 65 is great but feel it should be sooner. Also think people may be more supportive of paying if the schools weren't so elaborate. So, much money spent on what seems to be eye candy or to please a few wants. Teaching and learning can happen in a simple building.
#msg6020773UptownGirl : How old are you, again, roughly? I think that's way too short sighted...Do really want all the 20 year olds around you 20 years from now to have had terrible education? Society as a whole, functions a heck of a lot better, with well educated kids...and everyone benefits from that.
I do not see the need for for a football sta.dium jumbotron. There is more, but that is an OMG!. How does that benefit anybody's education? Sorts sending is out of control.

#msg6020782Joe : Then let them get an education/trade no one is stopping them. Again, I paid my fair share, let someone else pay for that. How about Mommy and Daddy? Survival of the fittest, that is society.
I won't. I bet you understood that you don't get what you don't pay for. You get what those you helped educate come up with. It is really very simple.
#msg6020787UptownGirl : You tell those 8 year olds! ; ) We have been publicly funding schooling for children for at least the last two hundred years, because even that long ago, long before electricity...we had enough common sense to know that paying for education for kids, regardless of income level, was a pretty good idea. It's hard for me to believe people don't see that.

We all benefit from having kids go to well funded schools. It's just as important as paying for cops and firefighters. Who is going to be wiping your butt in the nursing home?
I will not. I am not concerned with keyboarding or gold stars. They are overrated. If I cared I would keyboard just dandy.
