Humble ISD Student Petition Calls for Changes to Dress Code Enforcement

A student-led petition is calling on Humble ISD to review its dress code and how the policy is enforced across district campuses. The petition, created by Creekwood Middle School student Valeria Requena on August 19th, argues that dress code enforcement has been inconsistent between genders and body types. Requena says the effort was prompted by her own previous experience with the dress code and concerns shared by other students.

In an August 22nd update, the petition organizer said approximately 50 girls were sent to the Creekwood Middle School office for dress code issues before the first bell on August 20th, with roughly 100 additional girls reportedly cited throughout the day. She also alleged that no boys were dress coded during that period and that some students were told certain clothing was inappropriate because of their body type.

Students involved in the effort are asking the district to consider clearer, gender-neutral guidelines and more consistent enforcement. The organizer said the petition had gained approximately 500 online signatures, along with about 100 signatures collected on paper, within its first several days. All of the figures, comments and descriptions of individual dress code incidents above come from the petition and its organizer.

What do you think about the concerns about Humble ISD's dress code enforcement?

I don't know about gender neutral guidelines, but here is what I do know…

Some of these parents should be absolutely ashamed with what they allow their daughters to wear to KHS. I have seen young "ladies" getting out in the drop off line with all sorts of body parts hanging out of their tiny clothes. There is a way to be cute without showing all of your goodies. I do wish the school would enforce that type of stuff better.

txmusil :
If its inconsistent enforcement, that is an issue thats easily remedied, but if the complaint is that girls are targeted more bc of "their body type", they need to understand that girls have more to show and that needs to be covered. Also boys dont try and wear booty shorts and halter tops….

They should restrict the dress code even further and actually enforce it. It's school, not a night club. Look at what happened to the rodeo. People have no boundaries and no taste when it comes to appropriately dressing themselves. School and public, family-oriented events are no place to push boundaries and test the rules. Stand out by looking your best, appropriately covering your body and concentrate on learning. Leave the "dress for shock value" at home.

The problem is you have humans deciding and while there may be guidelines opinions will always be different and yes they shouldn't matter when there is written rules but it seems to always get in the way. At this point just give them "uniforms" but in a casual sense I don't need to see kids forced to tuck in their collard shirts just some school gear and thats it.

Black or Khaki pants and school colored polo-style shirts - this will solve the problem.

I just think that these kids are learning that any time they dont get their way, something offensive must have happened! Something unfair and sexist!
There would have been a "too bad, so sad" convo at my house lol

My husband and I were just talking about this yesterday. These young adults feel attacked or targeted when things don't go their way. Social media has warped their minds into thinking everything is rainbows and butterflies, they don't really know how to handle adversity.

Every generation has tried to protest against the fairness of the dress code with Humble ISD. I see students and parents alike that have complained about this issue every year. The dress code is there for a reason, and should continue to be enforced. Period. They are not special.
