Houston budget deal adds new trash fee after $174M shortfall fight But no worries, City Council approved Mayor John Whitmire's $7.5 billion budget Wednesday, closing a $174 million shortfall without raising property taxes. And he did promise not to raise your property taxes. Chill it's just 5 dollars more $5 monthly residential trash fee set to begin in July.

But then all the city officials relatives would have to take a pay cut.

If your village has private trash, like Best trash, the fee does not apply.

Is it ethical to charge for a City service I do not receive?

If a village has contracted with a private service, COH subsidizes the HOA for the village $6/month per home.
In MBV, the HOA sends that to Best Trash. The ~$7,200/month helps offset the cost to residents for the service.
Chris Hollins, Houston City Controller, said on the news that he doesn't understand why they are going to charge poor folk $5 per month for trash pickup when they are giving the rich folk who have private service $6 per month.
Well Chris, here's a hint. COH Solid Waste does not have the equipment nor the manpower to add thousands upon thousands of additional homes for pickup. I hear this Directly from Mark Wilfork the previous COH Solid Waste Manager firsthand on several occasions. The other thing Chris is the "rich folk" want reliable service. It has been this way for 30+/- years. Finally, one of the provisions in the original proposal for charging for COH garbage pickup is that when the fee incrementally hits its maximum of $25/month that the "rich folk" would also lose their subsidy.

#msg5941575elguapo : Every body raising prices, but you just watch……when prices do go down, and they will…..let's see how long we must wait for them to reverse these hikes.
