What is missing in big churches today?

A church is just a congregation of people gathering to worship- a pastor is just the facilitator of that worship. The music and hymns serve as an inspirational portion of all of it. But none of it is necessary to worship or to be in the house of God. Sometimes when I am walking on the greenbelt near my home, I take the path that leads to the shores of Lake Houston. I sit on the bench that overlooks the water and watch the herons and the ducks as the sun sets in solitude. There I find my sacred place and it is there that I worship in my own way.

What is missing in big churches today? Pews, bibles, hymnals, organs, piano....worship guide or bulletin. We have chairs, lights, theatrics, placards with QC for iphones to scan to sign up. We have quitars, keyboards, violins, singers, shreakers, rock and roll new songs. Gone are the hymns of yesterday, faith of our fathers and fading memories of evangelists. Remember Francis Hunter, Kathryn Khulmann, Billy Graham and the big crusades? No, young people will not remember. History will wipe that out of the books, Second Baptist will tell you traditional service is at 9 but mostly new modern songs. Gone are the hymns of faith. Of the top 25 Christmas songs, our hymns came in at # 18 silent night etc to #25. Tradition creeps to modern. Salem Lutheran in Tomball did very well having many hymns for Christmas eve eve. Lamb of God Lutheran in Humble had organ music but saw no organ but had holy communion with the candelight service. So when will the church have a real traditional service once a week? Appreciate the great cathedrals with the massive organs shown on this site recently. Awe inspiring. Classical greats will hopefully remain great options for music lovers. Pray we have enough leaders to have hymn sings once a Month that are real hymn sings and that young people learn the hymns of faith, never to be forgotten. Need more traditional services and less woke modern stuff.

teatime : You are correct. You can worship God anywhere and at anytime, however, He does give us some specific instructions. Deuteronomy says in several places that we are to worship God in the place He chooses; not the place we choose. And Hebrews 10:25 stipulates that we should meet in corporate worship (even more often as we see the day of judgement approaching). So while there is a form of worship that we can offer as individuals, there is a direct instruction that we do it as a congregation as well in the place He has directed. Additionally, the New Testament gives specific benefits of congregate worship that are not for individual worship.
