What is missing in big churches today?

Consider that originally, services didn't have any musical instruments and the hymns were just the text of scripture. I am old enough to remember the arguments about allowing guitars. The organ and pianos (originally not allowed either) were fine, but not "Satan's guitars!". Every time something changes, some people are upset. Just realize, Church services are called "Worship" services because it is not about you, it's about worshiping the thrice holy God. Music is performed by us for Him as an offering of worship. I too enjoy the old hymns, but I recognize that as long as the message doesn't change, the presentation has changed many, many times over the years. It's more about the hearts of the people than the style of the music. The Church has been tasked with reaching the world with the Gospel of Christ. That means we cater to different audiences at different times. I'd suggest you research Paul's message on Mars Hill in Acts 17. He changed his approach based on the people he was trying to reach, but not the message. Just remember, it's not about you or how it makes you feel, it's about Him and acknowledging His glory.

variety is the spice of life, as the saying goes. I read that many who were at the camel performance were impressed and moved to a renewal of faith. Certainly the Christmas story was relived and told anew.

I would suggest you read it in the context. Jesus was speaking of the Day of Judgement when all will give account of their lives before him. The most important verse is vs. 46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
