You don't have to do 10,000 steps per day......... A 2024 study found that even people who walked about 3,800 steps per day at any speed cut their risk of dementia by 25%. That's about 40 mins at a brisk pace on a treadmill. Or just start out easy with a 2,000 steps.
Just a suggestion to maybe join the Y on WLH. It's a good time to start going and even take a friend. Especially in this heat its cool and comfortable in the afternoons and not so busy. There is plenty of workout equipment and an elevator if you prefer not to use steps. Medicare Plans pay for it, so give it a try ? It doesn't smell sweaty and there's no music and just one TV that's muted. All you need is a t-shirt, shorts and sneakers, nothing fancy.

My husband sent me that the other day as proof that his 5000/day is OK! Told him to shoot for the 7000 instead

If you interpolate 3,800 steps per day cutting the risk of dementia by 25%...
Then I have cut my risk of dementia by 104%!!!
15,775 (steps I do daily)/3,800 (steps to achieve 25%) * 25% = 104%
I can't wait for the weather to cool off so I can go outside and enjoy my walk. Sometimes I walk on the treadmill at the gym, but it's just not the same as walking outside. I have been doing the elliptical at the gym more recently, so hopefully that has the same benefits as walking.
billcherie2 : This year, I averaged 15,775 steps per day. If you interpolate 3,800 steps per day cutting the risk of dementia by 25%... Then I have cut my risk of dementia by 104%!!! 15,775 (steps I do daily)/3,800 (steps to achieve 25%) * 25% = 104%

One reason we moved to KW was for the trails. But in 2006 I suffered a heat stoke on a canoe trip and I can't do the heat like I used to. So the treadmills at the Y work great for me now ! 4- 5 days a week.
ExCTGuyInTX : Wow - how are you getting those steps in?
I walk the dog 1.5 miles early in the morning and then another 1 to 1.5 miles at about 10.
Just moving around during the day accounts for some.
I have been averaging 11 days out of 14 days (5.5 days per week average) going to Planet Fitness and doing some sort of cardio.
Like yesterday, was 1 dog walk for about 1.75 miles. Then mowing the lawn, edging, and trimming accounted most of the rest of the steps.
Do you want to work out with me sometime?
