Rubylovesmom : I don't agree. Maybe its because I came of age during the Vietnam War era and was very active in campus protests myself. I think people making their voices heard in peaceful gatherings is one of the great things about democracy. Too many people complain without any action or are afraid of speaking their mind. I have no time for destructive protests and don't support lawless behavior. But if someone wants to march, chant, hold a sign...I say go for it. Make your voice heard regardless if I agree with it.

teatime : I agree - if people feel motivated to demonstrate peacefully, go for it. I think the nostalgic notions of past events contribute to belief that today's demonstrations are effective, particularly at the national level, while I personally believe they are not. But, I am in full agreement with you that many complain but don't do anything, and demonstrations are an avenue to attempt to make a statement.

I strongly believe in peaceful protest, just as our founding fathers did. They fought for independence from Britain and created the Constitution to prevent future generations from being subjected to the same kind of control. As Americans, we have the right to express our opinions peacefully, no matter what side you're on. If something isn't right to you, speak up. You have a voice and the freedom to use it. Nobody ever accomplished anything by doing nothing.

I think you might find people with different ways of thinking exist more around you then you might think. Plenty of people who don't agree with current actions and policies around. Doesn't make them liberals, Dems, communists, or evil. As Americans people should have a right to protest no matter what. Will there be some bad actors? Sure. We have people flip cars, light things up, and act the fool celebrating a sports win around the country and we don't sic a Federalized National Guard, Marines, and the like out. People keep saying oh their just mad because they're grabbing illegals. That's not why. They are mad because the way it's being done. Normalizing the tactics of how things are being done now doesn't do anything. It's more then one issue. If you don't agree with things you have the right to go for your own protest and stand across the street and yell at each other. Enjoy flexing your First Amendment rights just keep it civil.
