Mayor Pro Tem Dave Martin announced the City of Houston has started a major project to remove sediment from the Kingwood Diversion Ditch under the Northpark bridges. The project will restore flow capacity of the Diversion Ditch and significantly reduce flood waters entering Kingwood through Bens Branch. Risk of structural flooding of homes in Woodland Hills, Hunters Ridge, Bear Branch and Kings Forest impacted during Tropical Storm Imelda will be significantly reduced. St. Martha's School, Kids in Action and Pines Elementary School will also see a reduce risk of flooding. Project funding is just under $1,000,000. Project also includes repair and improvement of Bens Branch channel under the Tree Lane Bridge. This is a significant expenditure by the City of Houston to benefit Kingwood.

ChrisBloch : Does this include the ditch that goes from crossover at Hidden Pines and Northpark Drive that goes around behind the businesses of Firestone Auto and Walgreens then under Woodland Hills Dr?

ForestFinds : No, the ditch from Northpark to Woodland Hills Drive belongs to the Harris County Flood Control District. This ditch is becoming fouled with vegetation especially near the Woodland Hills bridge. We are working with Commissioner Ramsey's office and the Flood Control District to get this ditch cleaned out, but it may take some time before work starts as the Flood Control District has a backlog of projects it is working to complete. The sediment removal from the Diversion Ditch under the Northpark bridges will reduce the flow to this section of Bens Branch which really helps.

FlipZ : There is a national registry of wetland areas. The Kingwood Diversion Ditch and the man made channels of Bens Branch are not listed on this registry. Areas that remain "wet' 50% of the time can be qualified as wetlands, but this wetland designation is typically applied to floodway areas, but not the water channel itself. Removing sediment from the Kingwood Diversion Ditch will actually increase the amount of land that will stay wet a good portion of the time and will actually increase wetland habitat area.

Ticagro : I am a retired engineer who worked with Stan Sarman to identify specific opportunities to improve Kingwood drainage issues. Unfortunately, Stan passed away a few months ago. Stan was a civil engineer who worked for the consulting company that designed all the utilities, including drainage, for Friendswood Development when Kingwood was developed. After Friendswood turned all utilities over to the Municipal Water Districts (MUDS) set up in Kingwood, he was the engineer of record. Stan was also President of the Kingwood Super Neighborhood Council as well as the head of TIRZ 10. Stan was the driving force to get the Northpark overpass project to where it is today. He was an invaluable resource for all of Kingwood. Stan and I generated a list of priority projects for both the City of Houston and Harris County Flood Control District to address to improve Kingwood drainage. I have also worked with Bob Rehak who has the "Reduce Flooding" website. Bob is also a great resource for information on flooding issues in Kingwood. I would encourage everyone with an interest in drainage issues in Kingwood to follow the Reduce Flooding web page. Bob issues new posts nearly every day.

ChrisBloch : I'm feeling better. It seems a little knowledge of what is being done towards flooding reduces some of the anxiety. thank you.
