Kelsey Seybold is ridiculous

Wanna hear something absolutely ridiculous?

My almost 90 year old mother in law has been a patient at Kelsey Seybold for 25+ years & also has their Medicare insurance, Kelsey Advantage.

My poor MIL deals with SEVERE knee and back pain, plus rheumatoid arthritis, so she's been on pain medication for 10 years. (Same medication & same dose this entire time)

She needs a double knee replacement (and a spinal fusion) but she does not do well with anesthesia so she was advised years ago to use pain management versus 3 risky operations. In fact, the last time she had surgery was a hip replacement (about 20 years ago) and she died on the table 2x due to the effects of the anesthesia. 😳

Anyway, her doctor of 25 years recently retired. Her new doctor has now demanded that she be given a yearly 25+ panel DRUG SCREEN in order to continue to prescribe her the vicodin prescription.

👉 Listen to the drugs they are screening for:

*Heroin.
*Fentanyl.
*Methamphetamines.
*PCP aka Angel Dust.
*Cocaine.
*Methadone.
*Marijuana.
*Alcohol.
*Benzodiazepines. (Xanax)
*Morphine.
*Tricyclic Antidepressants.
*Propoxyphene.
*Suboxone.
*PLUS every other pain medication under the sun......including vicodin. (I guess to make sure she's taking it?)

She's always done yearly drug screens with her other doctor and they only tested for THC & her pain meds. (Like she has a choice in taking it! She couldn't function without it if she wanted to!)

Every drug screens she's ever done over the years has come back normal.

She'll be freaking 90 in December & she's never even heard of any of these drugs, let alone done any of them, lol. 🤦‍♀️ I think she smoked pot a few times in early 60s (60 years ago) but that's about it! 😂

My husband is also a Kelsey patient. He takes pain medication but he has a different doctor. His doctor also does a drug screen 2x a year but only tests for Marijuana and narcotic pain meds to make sure he's actually taking his prescribed pain medication - THAT'S IT. He gets drug tested at random for his job - and he doesn't even drink alcohol - so it's not like it's an issue but WHY in the HELL are they testing a woman this age for all this garbage?!

I can only think of one reason and that is to be able to BILL Medicare THOUSANDS of dollars for it. 😡

She can barely walk, so she gets all her lab work done in home, and they literally sent a nurse to our home at 6:45 this morning to watch her pee in a cup.

Absolutely RIDICULOUS!

We had a bad experience there with my late mom and her primary doctor. She refused to test my mother for dementia and denied her medications for it that could have helped. She also got a kidney functioning test result back and on her computer log in, it reported a normal test to us. Took them 2 days to call and tell us we needed to get in an ambulance ASAP as she in was actively in stage 4 renal failure. My mom died from dementia. Yes, they sure do like to bill the insurance!

That does sound ridiculous, and I'm sorry that she's having to go through all of that. By that age, prescriptions should just be a given, and the cost should be very little to free., in my opinion.

Not sure what sites all these new doctors are using, but I get worried when my physician or PA stares at a computer screen or tablet or phone and then tells me what is wrong with me. Do they not remember what they were taught in doctor college? Do they not hang around with old doctors anymore to learn things. Hell, I can use Doctor Google and Doctor Wickedpedia myself.

That is one of the things I really like about going to the VA, despite the distance. They have all the young residents, who supposedly know all the new things, but they also have old doctors who know things supervising them and keeping them under control.
Most of the new kids in the vascular surgery department are knife happy, and have been wanting to cut off my legs for the past 22 years, but the old guys reign them in, and let me keep on walking.

You might think about putting her on hospice. Not because she is about to die but because hospice insurance is so much better than Medicare at her age. My mom is 86, in assisted living with relatively good health and has Gentiva Hospice insurance. We love it. They take care of everything! Especially pain meds. Check into it. Your life could get a lot easier.

I can definitely relate to this. I don't know enough about the healthcare system to really explain why things are set up this way but I do know how frustrating it can be.

My dad lives out of state and he has to go through this same kind of process too. He says it's because of the side effect risks of taking Vicodin for someone his age. It seems like there are so many hoops to jump through and sometimes I wonder how older people are supposed to keep up with all of it.

I just wish getting the care you need could be a little simpler. But I tell myself these doctors are just trying to do the right thing for their patients by following government regulations.

My BIL had Kelsey Advantage plan. He had a lung nodule, found on a chest Xray when he had an emergency appendectomy. Kelsey was doing regular Chest CTs to monitor the nodule. During Covid, he started having difficulty swallowing. Getting a diagnosis was particularly slow during that time. They put a feeding tube in when he could no longer swallow at all. Turns out he had esophageal cancer and died soon after, alone, in the hospital. I asked my SIL if he'd gotten his CT scans done like he was supposed to. She said yes and the nodule was unchanged. What he wasn't told by his doctor (not sure if the doctor knew) was that an esophageal mass was detected months before on his routine Chest CT. I wouldn't have Kelsey insurance if it was free. I know "it could happen anywhere," but it happened there.

@StormChaser : I have never heard of them drug testing people who were on pain meds. I think this is insane for a 90 yr old. Poor thing needs her blood at this point! I have to wonder if they are testing her to make sure someone is not stealing her meds and she is actually taking them? I did not know this was a thing. Needless to say, no one here is on pain meds.

@Orangeapple : The trouble is, many older doctors are retiring. My cardiologist, who I've been seeing for the last 25+ years, retired last month. My ophthalmologist, who I've been seeing for the last 20+ years, is talking about retiring. My dentist is old enough to retire.

I hate having to start over with new doctors and explain things my old doc already knew.

@OBSD68 : I'm so sorry about your BIL. That is awful! I was so glad when Kelsey stopped taking my MIL's plan and she had to make a change. I always went with her to the dr. and I could not stand Kelsey!

Report them to Medicare for fraud. I guarantee you that they will bill for the tests but won't actually run them. My dad used to run a clinical lab. He would always cross reference tests run with tests billed and some docs billed tests but never had them ordered. Fraud.
Also, may want to look into taking boron. Has helped me enormously with shoulder pain from a metal plate that was put in after I broke my upper arm near the shoulder. I can tell it works because when I go on vacation and I don't bring it with me or stop taking it for a couple weeks, the pain returns as well as hip pain. @CaffeineFree : I was able to find an Ob/gyn that was older with more experience and an endocrinologist also. I had to look at all the available specialists. I got lucky. I think the young ones seem to be clueless and just going with what Kelsey mandates (mainstream corporate control).

At the bottom is a section describing when toxicology screening might be useful. He says he got that from his doctor before taking his toxicology test.
