Earlier today, a teenager riding a scooter was involved in a collision with a vehicle in the H-E-B parking lot on Kingwood Drive.
Houston Fire Department and Houston Police Department responded quickly, and we're thankful to report that the young rider's injuries appear to be minor, consisting primarily of road rash. He was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution for further evaluation.
This serves as an important reminder for all of us. Parking lots can be just as dangerous as busy roadways. Whether you're riding a scooter, bicycle, skateboard, or walking, please stay alert, make eye contact with drivers whenever possible, and avoid darting between parked vehicles. Likewise, drivers should slow down, minimize distractions, and be especially watchful for children and teens who may be difficult to see.
We're grateful this incident was not more serious and wish the young man a speedy recovery. Let's all do our part to keep one another safe.

cardinalsong : As much as I hate the way kids take chances, and hate that parents are not parenting, we should all step up our level of caution when driving. No driver wants to hit a child regardless of who is at fault. Sometimes it is unavoidable.
Kittle : parents just want to turn a blind eye to the True Danger of this situation. kids with NO education on negotiating traffic, traffic awareness, the Rules of driving, etc. I guess we will all have to keep praying
luannski : Kids being kids, in part because parents are not being parents, means drivers have to be careful because the kids are not.
NoBias : So scary. They are kids who have not learned to be cautious and/or polite. They are easily distracted and fearless .

Littles on high powered scooters have zero business sharing the roadways with 4 ton chunks of steel. To be sure they are fun as hell but there are parents right now wishing they'd just said NO.

Kittle : I agree. And I know that if I were to injure a child I would be devastated, regardless of whose fault it was.
luannski : The Aldi parking lot is awful. People drive like maniacs around there.
Kittle : Well said; the problem with drivers now, is that They are so distracted, on their phones, etc. so it is a whole 'Nother ball game with having to be a Defensive driver, to stay safe..which these kids are not mature enough to do, nor trained to do, Because they are so young.
MeAgain : The entrance by Aldis is extremely busy. HEB at Town Center and on Northpark is a nightmare both for driving and parking. We usually go at less busy times to avoid the hassles.
