History Alright, I was having a discussion with someone and I thought they were kidding on what they thought caused Pearl Harbor. I'm going to put up a poll to see if people actually know history or not. Option 1) Unprovoked attack by the Japanese on the US. Option 2) The attack on Pearl Harbor resulted from a gradual escalation of geopolitical tensions between the United States and Japan over control of East Asia. Throughout the 1930s, Japan aggressively expanded its territory by invading Manchuria and French Indochina, prompting a sharp diplomatic backlash from Washington. In response to these invasions, the United States imposed severe economic sanctions, culminating in a total embargo on oil and gasoline exports to Japan in 1941. Heavily reliant on American oil to fuel its military, Japan faced an economic crisis and demanded that the U.S. lift the embargo. When months of intense diplomatic negotiations failed to resolve the deadlock, Japanese military leaders decided to launch a preemptive strike on the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Hawaii to prevent American interference with their plans to seize oil-rich territories in Southeast Asia. Poll: Which happened

History has proven that your option two, although not nearly comprehensive enough to describe a very complex issue, is the more correct answer of the two.

I kept it brief. I've found if people on here see a wall of text they tend to stop reading. Feel free to put a vote on the poll.
I voted for the blockade. The common belief of unprovoked is way too simplified. There are always underlying political circumstances that are complicated.

There's too much detail in Option 2 for that not to be the answer. I know the attack was unannounced, but I don't think it was unprovoked.

#msg5923997CatalinaD : Ticagro : Orangeapple : Now did they teach you this in school?
#msg5924005StainlessSteelR : School was such a long time ago I barely remember. Lol. I'm pretty sure they told us it was unprovoked, though. It certainly garnered a lot more sympathy that way, since it was a "surprise attack".
I remember it being taught that way in primary school. Luckily, I have always been curious and asked questions. I had one history teacher, I am not making this up, in high school tell the class that J. Edgar Hoover later became President Hoover. It was the most insane timeline ever told as history. I disputed it, he argued I had no idea what I was talking about, and he sent me to the principal's office. I repeated the lesson verbatim, and the principal sent me back to class with a note. I have no idea what the note said, but our teacher told us to read our books and left for the principal's office himself.

My school days were in ancient times. I consider teaching to be mostly common propaganda back then. 📜

They taught latin and etiquette in elementary school when I went. As for propaganda, I imagine it's not changed much just what propaganda is taught in which decade.

Neither, it was a huge set up. Our "leaders" knew. War is big money.

That is my understanding as well.
Those in charge knew it was coming. Horrendous loss of life.
Gave us an excuse to use our big powerful bomb. 😢
