Families in East Montgomery County will see a visit from Santa in a Firemans helmet at the 4th Annual Operation Giving Heart on Tuesday, December 16 from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. at Bull Salas Park in New Caney.
Families in East Montgomery County will see a visit from Santa in a Firemans helmet  at the 4th Annual Operation Giving Heart on Tuesday, December 16 from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. at Bull Salas Park in New Caney. As a joint effort between local churches, both New Caney and Splendora Fire Departments, and Heavens Army of Resources approximately 1500 eligible area children will receive a brighter Christmas.

It began as a small idea to help local children from East Montgomery County receive a Christmas gift and has evolved to a wonderful community endeavor. All the kids are chosen from local schools with the help of the school counselors, said Founder of Heavens Army Lanora Purvis. The New Caney and Splendora Fire Departments have been a big help with the Fill the Hat Campaign for consecutive Saturdays. Each shift-A, B, and C shifts in both Splendora and New Caney Fire Departments compete for bragging rights and a meal.

The firefighters love the idea and it doesnt hurt that the winning shift receives a steak dinner, said New Caney and Splendora Fire Chief Jeff Taylor.

Local businesses and non profit organizations are encouraged to get involved by setting up tables at the event with informational resources and hands on activities for kids. Activities last year included face-painting, carnival games, coat giveaways, duck toss, Reindeer Games, and pictures with Santa. There is always a fireworks show at the end of the evening, also. Celestial Displays each year donates their time, resources, and generosity to insure a fabulous ending to the Christmas event.

ï¿½Our long relationship with the New Caney Fire Department got us involved with Operation Giving Heart in 2010, said Candy Robinson, President of Celestial Displays. Celestial Displays has continued their support of the event with Heavens Army and the addition of the Splendora Fire Department. The evening is one of celebration and giving. Fireworks are a great way to celebrate.  This is one of many gifts that we can give to the children of Montgomery County.

Operation Giving Heart 2013 was able to help over 1100 children and their families with assistance.

Each year we are able to raise more money through the Fill the Hat Campaign and other community donations to help more families! This year we are hoping to have 1500 children that are eligible to receive assistance, said LaNora Purvis.

Besides the local fire departments, donations have been received by Precinct 4 Commissioner Ed Rinehart, Precinct 4 Commissioner Elect Jim Clark, Chick-Fil-A Kingwood, Enstep Technologies, The Filer Man, JLA Realty, Iconix Marketing, Acutraq Background Screening, Platos Closet in Humble, Minuteman Press in Humble, and Kingwood Signs in Porter.

Churches participating in this years project include Cornerstone Church of Cleveland, Christian Cowboy Fellowship in Cleveland, Shalom Christian Center in Kingwood, Lighthouse Revival Center in Livingston, Little Country Church in New Caney, Grace & Compassion Church in New Caney, Embrace Fellowship in New Caney, and Northpark Christian Church in Kingwood. KSBJ will also be available with the Prayer Tent.

Eligible families will attend the event with food, festivities, crafts, entertainment, resources, and the opportunity to select gifts for their children. Parents are escorted into a private room with all the gifts. and are able to choose a few age appropriate gifts to take home and wrap for their children. The parents then immediately take the items to their vehicles in large garbage sacks. The children remain with a responsible adult in the arena where there is an abundance of food, entertainment, and festivities for the kids.

The event truly puts the UNITY back in community, said Lanora. Toys, gift certificates, and monetary donations may be taken to the New Caney Fire Department located at 19870 FM 1485 in New Caney or contact LaNora Purvis at 832.401.7965. Checks must be made out to Heavens Army. Volunteers still needed.
