LSC-Kingwoods Artist Recital Series will present a performance of duo pianists, Friday, February 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Instructional Buildings Recital Hall. Shannon Hesse and Jane Perkyns will perform works from Copland, Rorem, Brahams, Milhaud, Bennet and Lutoslaski.

Audience members are sure to be amazed by the sight and sound of two world-class concert pianists playing two grand pianos on the stage of our beautiful Recital Hall, said Jay Whatley, chair of the music department. Drs. Hesse and Perkyns are both well-established artists and are faculty members at local universities. By bringing them to LSC-Kingwood, we are building partnerships with local universities, providing opportunities for our students to complete their Bachelor of Music degrees. I am thrilled to welcome them to our campus, explained Whatley.

Hesse, keyboard area coordinator at Houston Baptist University, has performed both nationally and internationally as a solo and collaborative pianist, including a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall with soprano Marion Dickson in 2009. Her concert schedule consists of recurring guest appearances in recitals sponsored by organizations such as the College Music Society, National Association of Teachers of Singing, Society of Composers, Inc., Tuesday Musical Club, Galveston Island Arts Academy Concert Series, Greenbriar Consortium, and the Houston Composers Alliance. She regularly performs with musicians from the Houston Symphony, including her husband, cellist Anthony Kitai. A devoted teacher, Hesse is a long-standing member of Music Teachers National Association, where she is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music. She is frequently in demand as an adjudicator and her students have been prizewinners in Houston-area piano competitions.

Hesse has served on the faculties of Texas Southern University and Valdosta State University, and spent many wonderful summers teaching at Westminster Choir College's High School Piano Camp and at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, where she served as Coordinator of Collaborative Piano. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Dr. Hesse holds additional degrees from Catholic University and Westminster Choir College. She is a member of the honors societies Phi Kappa Lambda and Alpha Lambda Delta. Her teachers have included Jean Barr, Ingrid Clarfield, Marilyn Neeley, and Rita Sloan.

Jane Perkyns, Associate Professor of Music has been a member of the faculty of Texas Southern University in Houston, TX since 1991 teaching applied piano, music history, theory, piano pedagogy and assisting in opera workshop and performance seminar classes and served for three years as the Music Coordinator in the Dept. of Fine Arts.  She was the 2011 recipient of the TSU McCleary Teaching Excellence Award.

Perkyns has performed extensively throughout Canada and the USA, appearing both as soloist, and collaborative artist. She has also been heard on both regional and national radio programs and has had the honor of premiering several works both in the solo and chamber music field. She is also in great demand as a clinician and adjudicator for piano workshops and competitions. Her accomplishments have been recognized in several editions of Whos Who in American Education, Whos Who of American Women, Whos Who in America, and Whos Who in the World. Her ongoing research in the teaching and performing areas has led to lectures and demonstrations at various musical conferences including the World Piano Pedagogy Conference, and the College Music Society regional conferences.  Her article publications have also appeared in Texas Music Teacher.

Tickets for the evening performance are $5. Reservations can be made by calling 281-312-1709.

Hesse and Perkyns will also perform a master class for students on Friday, February 28 from 3 5 pm in the Recital Hall. The master class is open to the public.
