Do you keep pressing the snooze button on the reminder to do prepare your tax form? There may be many reasons to procrastinate this task and start gathering bank statements and receipts, thinking about life's changes that may affect which forms need to be filed or reading about the new tax laws.
To avoid late fees and feel confident, the AARP Tax-Aide Service has trained volunteers that are ready to provide free and professional help in our community.
This year, April 17 is the dead line for people to prepare and file their federal income tax return.
The free service will be available to every person of any age or income at the nation's largest tax counseling center, situated at Lone Star College- Kingwood's offsite location at the East Montgomery County Improvement District in 21575 Highway 59 North, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This center will be closed on March 13 and 15.
Another place where the program will be available to help low- to moderate- income taxpayers is at the Harris County Public Library (HCPL) Kingwood and Atascocita branches.
Both locations have tax forms and booklets with instructions about how to file electronically or through regular mail, tax news, tips to reduce errors, save paper and get a faster refund.
It is recommended to bring copies of last year's income tax return, social security number of the people filing as well as dependents, W-2 forms, any type of 1099 form like 1099-R which shows your miscellaneous income, 1099-R in case a pension or annuity was received, 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B showing interests paid. In the case of itemizing deductions, bring all receipts related.
Volunteers will be at the Kingwood Branch Library, located at 4400 Bens View Lane, on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The address of the Atascocita Branch Library is 19520 Pinehurst Trail Drive, and the aid will be available on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
All branches will be closed April 6, 2012 in observance of Good Friday
