Yap On! Yap OFF! - Kingwood

Do you have a yapper? You know the type of dog: cute and cuddly, but barks at everything. I have an older silky terrier and she is not vicious but wants to communicate about everything in rapid yap successions.   I enjoy walking the beautiful Kingwood Greenbelt trails with the dogs but my yappers yap takes away from the serenity of the trails. She begins her yapping at the sight of humans or animals and really gets excited. I rarely take her with me now.

I have tried almost everything to correct this problem using treats, scolding, blocking her view, water spray, and even barking back at her (I should have recorded this for Americas Funniest Videos). Nothing worked.

I began research for solutions to the excessive barking and that lead me to bark collars. I found that there is a variety of bark collars.  Some use a tone, some use a spray, and still others use a static electric shock. I was a bit timid about using a bark collar but after much research and the continued yapping, I decided to try one out. Several of the collar companies offer a guarantee and easy return policy.

Before making the purchase, I also contacted my vet who assured me that my dog was healthy and, when used strictly as a training aid and while supervised, the collar should be safe.

I am happy to report that we are on day five wearing the bark collar with positive results. I place the collar on her during the day and remove it during the evening or other times when she is free to bark. The atmosphere has improved: with just a few barks before the collar reacts, which gives her a choice to stop yapping. Not only is our home more tranquil but my little yapper seems calm and in control.  The Kingwood Greenbelt trails are an essential part of my exercise routine and that of my larger dog as well as providing an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and now my little yapper can enjoy them too.

So do not give up on that yapper. There is Hope! Please do not think about taking that pet to the humane society, shelter or that relatives place way out in the country. This could be your solution.

Bark collars can range in price from $49.99 to $149.99 and have different types of corrections, from silent tones, citronella sprays to static shock.

There are several good pet stores in Kingwood but one of my favorites is the Pet Ranch located at Kingwood Drive and West Lake Houston Road in Kingwood. The Pet Ranchs bark collar sells for $119.98 (for stubborn little dogs) and any associate, or the owner Kent Stevens, can offer assistance with its purchase.

Try one of these collars. It just may work for you too. Good Luck!
