Last night our little dachshund Tahoe turned 1 year old.  Unfortunately, he was also bitten by a copperhead snake while playing outside in our small back yard. His face started to swell and he was having trouble breathing/drooling. My fiancé rushed him to the vet late last night where he was given antibiotics, pain medication, and steroids.  The swelling to his face has improved and he is now stable.  While at the vet my fiancé met another owner from Woodstream Village whose small poodle was bitten by a snake around the same time Tahoe was.  I moved from an area in the country where we never worried about snakes, let alone venomous ones.  I'm glad it looks like he will be ok, but I've heard stories of other dogs who weren't so lucky. 4951

Well hopefully it learned not to mess with snakes. It took Bree twice, catching bee/wasp to learn, she doesn't go after insects any longer.Echo on the other hand, has not been stung yet.Heidi stuck her nose in the face of a large snapping turtle laying eggs in our yard once. She paid the price with a couple good cuts on her nose and muzzle. She still sticks her nose in a turtles face. And she is the "smart" one. 4951

Poor baby. I'm glad the vet could take care of him. They just get so curious. My Penny sticks her nose in the direction of anything that moves. Watching her with frogs is actually pretty funny. She'd definitely be in for a snake bite if she found one. 4951

I'm glad to hear he is going to recover. It's good to know that little dogs can get bit by a poisonous snake and still recover. We have seen several snakes around lately and I am so afraid my little dog will get bit. We have a cat that is suppose to keep the snakes away, but is falling down on the job and seems to be more interested in killing squirrels these days. 4951

I heard that if they get bit anywhere other than their faces that they usually don't survive. Not sure if that's true. But I worry about my pup too....she is a sniffer and gets on a scent and has tunnel vision. Scary, glad both ups are okay!Edited to add, I just googled, and the above probably isn't true.  4951

It was very quick. Within an hour or so.  I didn't think I could be so attached to a four legged creature. It was scary!  4951

When I got my first Lab she was for a family pet but also for retrieving waterfowl. I joined a hunting retriever club where I learned how to teach my dog the commands needed and discipline for her to be a good retriever. I also did a de-snaking class where the dogs were on leash and then brought up close to a large rattlesnake then given an electric shock via a collar to teach them to stay away. Seemed to work as she was never bitten even though we often saw vipers early in the hunting season out in the Katy rice fields. 4951

@v1kings28We live in Woodstream as well and not a summer goes by that our lab/dane mix gets bit by a copperhead (we back up against the reserve, so our critter population seems to be higher).  The first time she was bit we took her to the vets and they did the same thing.  Each time afterward we just give her a dose of Benedryl and she hangs out in her cage for a few hours, then she's back to her normal self.  If there's a 'good' place for a dog to be bit by a venomous snake is the jowls since there's a lot of fatty tissue that can absorb the venom and keep it from entering the blood stream. 4951

Oh no, hope he is doing better! Since we back up to woods now I have been worried about snakes with our golden. I wouldn't know the first thing to do. We go to 494 vet but it's so far away...what do you do or where to go if something like this happens? And if the vet is closed? Ugh...something more to worry about! I'll just die at sight of my first snake! 4951

keep some tins of sardines in the cupboard for times like that. as soon as you realize the dog has been bitten, give them a tin of the sardines and also the weight appropriate dose of benadryl. you can give them the pills by bedding them in peanut butter wrapped in a piece of a tortilla. in this area, it's a good idea to always have sardines and benadryl on hand for copperhead bites. there might be quite a few more than usual from all the flooding driving them out into other areas 4951

@ProblemAgain:  What is the benefit of the sardines?
