Anybody use one that plugs into the wall socket? Researching them, they seem to boost the signal about 30% but it also weakens the bandwidth I believe. Not sure if this is the right solution. I still have a decent signal throughout the house, no dead spots just weaker in areas. 4951

How old is your router? I recently went with a new router (AC) and that solved all my problems. Here is some info.http://www.cnet.com/topics/networking/best-networking-devices/802-11ac/ 4951

@beastmode: Is that the same as a cell phone signal booster? Apparently, we are close to a tower but rumor has it that Verizon controls it but let's another carrier use a lot of its juice. Anyway, wifi can suck at the house and I often switch back and forth, eating up data. 4951

Think I will eventually get a new router. Not that bad of an issue to invest $80 into this extender and the newer routers have some nice features that hone in on devices instead of sending out a blanket signal. 4951

@beastmode: Unless you have a recent model, the new routers are a lot faster also.

@donnatella: Do you use an iPhone? If you do, to help cut down on cellular data cost because of a weak wi-fi signal in the house, go to Settings/Cellular scroll to the bottom and turn off "Wi-Fi Assist". Hope this helps.

@beastmode: You might consider getting a second wireless unit to locate on the other side of your house.  You'd want to make sure your channels don't overlap, but otherwise there are some nice advantages to having a second.  Wireless is a shared medium (CSMA/CA) and the number of devices connected to it can dramatically impact performance.  I have a wireless controller at each end of my house and pair our wireless devices fairly evenly between them.
