@Happyday:

In case you didn't know, there are a couple of changes for next year.....new superintendent and kindergartners will start going full days with no nap.

I recently learned from this site that you can "opt out" of the standardized tests. 4951

What are the ages of the kids? Are there any special needs to consider? 4951

@Annie: Navigating through the district with a special needs child is a completely different beast so great question.

I guess only time will tell with the new superintendent.  I am hoping that all the bad things posted online don't come to fruition.  I think kinder being all day is a mistake.  Especially for kids that never went to pre-K. Will be quite an adjustment.   4951

@RogueHippEE:  My daughter had a bit of dyslexia when she was in elementary school.  My wife had to go to the school repeatedly and even contact the school district to make sure she got the help she needed.  As our daughter got in middle school and high school, we paid a tutor to assist her but she was over the worst of it by then.  Had we not gotten her the help she needed in elementary school, she would not have progressed as well as she did.

@Weathergirl5: My olderesume one had kinder all day (I work in New Caney in Elementary) and it was great! But they had two recesses and specials. Kinder in Humble does not have specials. My second went to kindergarten in an Humble school, so if they add in another recess and specials, it should work out ok.

@angelpie:

I don't know about the second recess but I work at an elementary school in humble isd and kinder already has daily specials. Except on early release days. No specials on those days for anyone. But right now kinder specials are only 30 min and I think next year they will be 50 min like the other grades. So hopefully it will all work out Emoticon 4951

Thanks for all the information! I have one going into kinder. I dont know yet about special needs but that could always come to light if the school tests my child. As of now my child seems ok, possibly ADD, but maybe this age short attention span is common. What are daily specials at school? 4951

Can u share more about opting out of testing? Why would someone do that? Is it just too much pressure? 4951

This might seem weird but you will need school appropriate pajamas and popcorn on hand. So many times we'd get an email on a Thursday saying the class earned a reward and they could wear pajamas and bring popcorn the next day. Hated the late night runs to Walmart! 4951

@lilybart: Interesting - we never had any late night Walmart runs.  Were you buying new pajamas for each reward day?  We just sent him to school in the same ones.

I think all-day Kinder is a great thing. My son is much further along in many ways than friends' kids who are in half day.

THAT SAID, I do NOT agree with no nap or DEAR (drop everything and rest) time. Even with my son having done full day preK-4 last year and full day Kinder this year, he still looks forward to that rest time during the school day. They need it! 4951
