My husbands blood pressure is off the charts. He is out
Of town and will be home on this Thursday. On the day he left, he went to the urgent care center. The dr there gave him amlodipine besylates he is taking 10mgs.
He has been documenting. Since April 11 it's been 168/102
To 144/90 and I'm worried sick. Our insurance allows us to go to specialist without referrals. Should I get an appt with a cardiologist or just a Pcp? My Pcp is booked out over three weeks. I don't want to wait. 4951

Not a nurse, but when my DH BP hit 160/100 I got his behind to his PCP.  I personally think thats the first line of defense rather than a cardiologist.  I would call the doc back and see if you can see anyone else in the office.  High BP isn't to be messed with.   4951

Call his PCP, tell him the problem and maybe he can call something into a Walgreens where he can get the meds anywhere, even out of town. Sounds like an increase in dose or a switch to a new med are in order. 4951

Does your insurance have a nurse line you can call and get some advise.  I would think it shouldn't wait until he gets home.    4951

Your PCP may not be familiar with the latest/best BP medicines.  If possible, have him see an Endocrinologist.  If he can't get in to see an Endocrinologist soon, see your PCP and at least get him on something that will start him in the right direction. 4951

Check with your insurance to see if they offer teledoc too. Your hubby can call in and get to speak directly to a dr who will then prescribe something to carry him over until he can be further evaluated by his pcp or recommend another dr to see. I know many BCBS plans offer this option and some of the other major insurers are starting to offer this service too. 4951

Thanks y'all. I got him into a dr weaver on next Monday. Same Pcp office. I spoke with the nurse. He will be home this Thursday....I hope.  His travel schedule gets whacked up all the time.  4951

@cgm10sne1: Until then, tell him to do some relaxing techniques several times per pay.  Sit in a chair with a head-rest or against a wall.  Lean his head back and focus on each limb and let them relax completely.  Take deep slow breaths, and clear his mind of everything but his breathing.  Sometimes, it helps to shake his arm/leg a bit before letting it relax and to move his head in a big circle to relax any tight muscles in his neck.

I like to get my medical advice from twitter. I find KDC, FB & Instagram to be lacking in urgent medical issues such as severely high blood pressure. I know that there are an abundance of doctors, urgent care facilities & world class hospitals close by but social media can fix anything. 4951

@YankeeInTX: Funny sarcasm, but I think the OP is not looking for medical advice but rather ideas on how to get in to see a doctor sooner, and whether to bypass primary care for a specialist.

@cgm10sne1:

He NEEDS to be seen quickly with the bottom number so high. Is he using differnt bp machines or the same one? Might need to get it checked from another source as well. 4951

How about a walk-in urgent care facility?

@SandyKnee:

Yes, that's what i was thinking if his dbp is over 100. I have seen many a patient hospitalized for that first number she gave. 4951
