She was a good secretary, she always made notes in shorthand. We had someone translate some of her diaries from the war years. An author who was writing a book on the OSS contacted me because she had read that my mom kept a diary when she was in Detachment 404 in Ceylon.  Some of it was interesting, some was just boring notes about what she did that day, the price of stockings and lipstick.  Sometimes it was about parties she went to with all the officers. She dined with Mountbatten a few times. Her notes on him were interesting! 4951

My Mom learned shorthand as well and it was always so interesting to look at her secretarial notes! I would love to hear some of your Mom's stories. Emoticon 4951

yall - not all of us who know shorthand are dead or are dinosaurs!!!!!   I am a retired 64 year old Executive Secretary for 42 years, took shorthand at 125 wpm, and still type 125 wpm......there are still some of us living on this earth that have these talents and skills that few even know about any more - geez.......and I use each of these skills numerous times a day, and in fact can churn out e-mail "epistles" to all my friends in a matter of minutes..... 4951

Wow this is very interesting. I'm going be honest though, I had to google "shorthand". This is very very cool! How hard is it to learn? 4951

@magnoliamam: Do you ever take shorthand in your head while people are talking? I took shorthand in high school and was really, really good at it. To this day, many years later, my skills are still pretty darn good.

I learned it in High School. I wasn't as fast as @magnoliamam (I was only at about 120 wpm). I still remember lots of it, but don't think I could get my hands flying that fast anymore!! Also, mine wasn't as neat as your mom's @Chrisinkingwood. My Shorthand teacher would've loved her's for sure!! I bet it was really interesting to read what she wrote from those days. 4951

i think shorthand is still used in the court reporter's job. so much has gone to mechanical recording tho even tho the problem with mechanical recording is the lack of clarity from different volumes and voices 4951

@FeelinMinnesota:

Hard. Lol I type faster with one or two fingers than two hands. Heck I'm faster typing one hand using one finger than I can type without looking.
The whole are of handwriting is dying. It's sad. 4951
