Since water is costly and in short supply with the draught, I think our MUD should make rounds  and adjust the sprinklers so they do not water the road and adjust the time so as not to have run off. We need to be more conscious of our resources and cut costs and waste whenever possible.  also there is no need to water after it rains or while it rains.  Hope our MUD is listening and reading this too.  Thanks. 4951

How about not having them on when it is raining?  That literally drives me nuts! 4951

@allymansfield, our sprinkler system is supposed to have some sort of rain detector.  It doesn't work very well.  If it's POURING, the sprinkler system won't come on.  But if it poured a few minutes ago but has stopped?  It'll come on.  If it's sprinkling?  It'll come on.  Drives me nuts.  4951

@JeepHair that is why we just do our manually.  We rarely water our lawn but it looks just as good as everyone else's.  4951

@JeepHair: The same here.  Those "rain detectors" are not very effective.  As for private property, the COH (we don't have a MUD) doesn't care..... as long as they get paid for the water used. When our sprinkler system got installed, they tapped into a circuit that is tied to a GFCI in our master bath.  If it's raining, or going to rain, I can trip the GFCI and power to the sprinkler control is off.  I don't even need to step into the detached garage.  The sprinkler control has a battery to save the program.  I just reset the GFCI when I want the sprinkler system to resume it's program.

@Retired_Engineer: That's really cool.  I always intend to remember to just turn it off when it's supposed to rain or if its been raining, but part of that challenge is remembering which days its supposed to come on in the first place... Actually, it's about time for me to go out and just turn it off, anyway.

There are sensors on the newer models that detect the moisture in the soil. It really has to work in tandem with a rain sensor. For all our technology it is still hard to perfect. I agree, a lot of wasted water on the city, no telling how many gallons....it may even be cheaper to waste water than retrofit these systems for something that saves and also costs more to maintain....sensors breaking....which is the case with a lot of this stuff like LED bulbs. Sure, they burn a lot less energy but they also cost a fortune.  4951
