Ah, the wonders of ancient crossbreeding and taking advantage of natural mutations. In the late 70s, I went with one of my wife's uncle to run an errand.  On the way back, he decided to get a watermelon from a roadside stand.  When we got to his house, he called his brother (lived next door) to come over where there was a picnic bench set under a big tree.  He cut open the watermelon and commenced to cursing.  The meat of the watermelon was yellow.  Now, I had never seen anything but a red watermelon, so I was thinking it was spoiled.  After they had a little fun with me, they started laughing and said it was OK.  He cut off a piece and handed it to me.  I wasn't about to taste it until one of them did first (you had to know these guys!).  One grabbed a piece and started eating it.  I ate mine and it was delicious.I had a lot of fun with these uncles.  They were really characters.  They also ran a septic tank service out of their houses and I would often go on runs with them. 4951

I've never been a big fan of watermelon. Now honey dew, I could probably live off of that, as well as cantaloupe. 4951

@bp2018:  I went through a phase where I didn't like the sloppiness and the seeds from eating watermelon (the "pick up and slice and dive in" method).  But I realized that I loved watermelon enough to put up with the mess.  Also, we can eat it with a fork and knife and eliminate most of the sloppiness.  I do periodically enjoy taking a nice piece of cold watermelon and sitting in the backyard.  Sitting with my legs spread so I don't drip juice on my pants, and spitting the seeds out.  Even better is to just strip naked and let the juice go where it may.  When you're finished, just hose yourself off.  But some of my neighbors asked me to stop that.I also love honeydews and cantaloupes!  My favorite is to cut them into chunks and mix them.  We used to make a huge bowl of mixed fruit:  all three melons, pineapple, grapes, etc.  Now that the kids are grown and out, it would spoil before we could eat it all.

I think what Mr @fofa was showing a natural watermelons have a cross section. Hybridizing them has made more food for everybody and yes they are still organic. in·or·gan·icˌinôrˈɡanik/adjectiveadjective: inorganic1. not consisting of or deriving from living matter.without organized physical structure.2. Chemistryof, relating to, or denoting compounds that are not organic (broadly, compounds not containing carbon).3. Linguistics 4951

Love any type of melon, especially watermelon!  There's a recipe out there somewhere for tomato/watermelon salad.  Strange combo but it's really good!    Chunks of watermelon, tomato, red onion, olive oil, basil and lemon juice.   4951
